Title: Books on proper feeding of a Dachshund!
Post by: Jake95 on September 13, 2010, 09:27:08 AM
My brother has a 5 year old male dachshund which he loves dearly, but unfortunetly he thinks he is loving him by feeding him a boiled chicken leg just about everyday. Or they will give him something from the last restuarant meal they had. They claim he will not eat dry food so they feel sorry for him. I am looking for a good book I can purchase and have sent to him. Their vet has already told them the dangers of feeding him this way but for some reason it is not sinking in. Their dog has already had an enlarged pancreas. I told him how serious that is and their son also tells them they are feeding him wrong. This dachshund is at least 4-5 pounds overweight also. Eleanor

I don't have any specific books suggestions...maybe Google  and get some ideas?   Hope it works and he becomes more savvy about feeding !!!  Sad though, it happens so often.....  Keep trying !

You might want to check out some back issues of The Whole Dog Journal.

it's a dog, not a human, He's killing his dog slowly by feeding it like a human.

and no dog that has a supply of kibble has ever starved to death.

If he is making food for the dog (boiled chicken leg) and wishes to do this, there are lots of good nurishing recipes for home made dog food that he could try. The chicken is fine but he needs more then a chicken leg for a well balanced diet. As for the restaurant food - I am shuddering just thinking of the unnecessary spices, fat, and artificial flavoring that the poor dog is eating. yikes.

Thanks for they replies!  I shudder everytime I think of how they are feeding this dachshund. But don't dispair I will continue on my mission. I will send him a care package in a few days. My dachshund is 16 years old and doing well. So I think I qualify to tell my brother how to feed his dachshund. Eleanor

I just put into Google "feeding a dachshund".  Here is one article that brings up the important aspect of dry kibble.  Looks like an informative article.  Maybe your brother will reconsider if he sees something in print from Vets or Breeders.
