Title: A very sad day...
Post by: doxielady5569128 on September 08, 2010, 11:28:36 AM
My hero has passed away.  He died this morning in his sleep at 95 years of age.    He wasn't always the sweet gentle man he was later in life, but he was always full of love and bravery.  He served his country in WWII as a mechanic for the Flying Tigers.  He got to see many amazing and scary things during those years and later met the love of his life.   They were married and had 2 kids.   In 2002, she lost her battle with lung cancer after bravely fighting.   This was the first time I had ever seen him cry in my entire life!!   He was very sad and lonely after that.  I had the priveledge of having him sit as my "substitute grandpa" at my wedding (he was my grandpa's brother).    He was honored to sit there for me and made sure he let me know how much he enjoyed the day.      After that, I had the priveledge of helping clean his home and helping him get to doctor's appointments and do his grocery shopping.   Even when he broke his hip, he faced his new challenges with bravery and we only caught him shedding one tear because the pain was too much.   He had to move into the nursing home and lose everything he owned to pay his medical bills, including his home which he built with his own hands.    I couldn't attend the auction a few weeks ago, because I knew I would just be angry watching people haggle over his precious things.   Through it all he kept a smile on his face and even started doing crafts in his nursing home over the past few weeks.   Despite the fact he was nearly blind.      He was always my hero and I loved listening to his war stories.   We will forever cherish the video of him telling many of his war tales.  Its a 3 hour long dvd!!   I will miss him a lot and will think of him always.

Sorry to be so lengthy, but I had to get this out and I knew you guys would be respectful and understanding.   Please say some prayers for our family during this sad time.
