Post by: DeeanDave on September 02, 2010, 01:00:05 PM
I'm wanting to get car seats for my furboys, Sarge & Duggie, so we can do some looooonnnngggg distance traveling via auto!  So, I'm doing a call out to see what our WW families have for their furkids.....what do you like, pros, cons on the variety of brands?  Thanks for all your input!  Dee

Sam and Eddie had Buddy Seats and really loved them.  Eddie always had to have a window seat so he could feel the wind in his hair.  Sam sat in front with me and with the seat being higher up he could watch the trucks next to him, some of the truckers would smile and wave.  The only problem was when the lady at the bank drive thru sent biscuits back they couldn't get to them without my help.

With my arthritis being so bad now Danni gets the royal treatment and is carried around in a travel case.  She just hunkers  down until we get to our destination.

As you know, Red and Islay do around 12.000km a year as back seat drivers for us and we have found the little car harnesses with the padded chest strip which clip onto the car seatbelts and have a swivel bolt to be the most comfortable and practical.  They can twist and move and circle to settle well and yet are safe at all times.  We have walking harnesses from wienie in the window, like hug-a-dox, but they fix the dog to the seatbelt and a long journey needs them to be able to move and change positions.

Obviously there are more options available in the U.S than over here and in many different price ranges.  We have found the car harness option great as we can safely take them with us anywhere any time in any model of car in any country and they are still comfortable and safe and the harnesses weigh next to nothing to transport and attach directly to a lead, if you wish, to make things easy when you stop for piddle pauses.

Everything said, we have a seat protector layer, then a fleece protector layer and then two independent pieces of typical vet crate fleece liner each to scratch and twist on to get themselves really comfortable AND a quilt to cover them for the winter trips.

We have tried everything under the (European) sun available to us and found this solution gives them the freedom of the backseat without danger and is easily washable amd transportable and gives them maximum safety.  We are in the U.K. With our car for a little longer before we set off for Spain and can send you pics if you like.

Soooooooo, where are you thinking of going?  Any chance of our way?

We insist Parker sit in the back seat behind the passenger. I refuse to give him free run of the car for safety reasons. A very good friend of mine was critically injured when her dog got under the gas pedal.
Anyways Parker has a harness to keep him in the back, and it gives him room to sit or lay down. We have made a raised box so that he can be up high and look out the window. There is a blanket in the box, and it's hinged so that it can be folded up when Parker is not with us. It also can be moved easily in and out of the car.
We get quite the looks when we have the grand kids. One in a booster seat, one in a baby seat and Parker in his special seat. All of them sitting good as gold with their busy toys.

I've got one of those too! Wilson loves it!

Like others,  my dogs are either strapped in or caged for safety reasons.

Ms. Lucy prefers the airline crate.

Mr. Wilson loves the car seat.

This is what I have for all four of mine, too.  I can clip three of them into the back seat seatbelts and they can comfortably lie down.

We have these harness things (very simple) that attach to the seat belt which clip to the dog's harness.  They are very sturdy and allow just enough room for some movement.  They are adjustable.  Maddie loved hers. She'd settle right in.  We always had a quilt in the back seat for their comfort.  Bonnie is my worried traveler and would just sit with her seat belt on and whine softly.  She isn't amused with the motion of the car.

You can either clip the harnesses directly to the seatbelt or loop a clip around the central seatbelt and attach the harnesses to that as we have done in one of the pics since we have the protector on the seat which covers up the seatbelts at the left and right sides.  You can also buy an adapter, as sketched below, if you find it easier.
Let us know how you get on and if you need any help.

Thank you, Andrea and Miguel for the pictures and Red and Islay for modeling the harnesses.  I'm going to go that route for the boys.......now to go shopping for them soon!  The visual of seeing them has helped me with my decision tremendously!

We have a large Snoozer seat and it was great for Ru and Bran...then along comes Toby and it is perfect for him by himself !!!!  We haven't traveled with all 5 yet...so I need to look into getting.. eeeeek, probably 2 more !!!!  I love it though and have had it for multi years and it has worn well !!!!    The seatbelt runs across the back to secure and then there are clips that hook onto their harness and strap around the seat belt.  Let us know what you decide!

Looks like those cutie pie seasoned travellers have it figured out !!!  The carseats work pretty much the same - it just gives them some height so they can look out the window !!!!

This is the one I have.  It came with a harness, but I use the ones I already use for the dogs-I'm pretty sure I pitched the harness they sent with this piece.   Mine shortens up to about a 15 inch length and expands to about double that.

We are sure you will find them really comfortable to use and safe.  They do, of course, look a lot neater without seat protectors, blankies, fleeces, dachsie harnesses and collars!  Both the car and dachsies look sleeker then. I am afraid we were off for a drive and walk when we took the pics so they were fully togged up ready for the mountains.  They usually "go naked" here in the garden and at home...

We'll be leaving the U.K. For our 5 day drive home on Sunday next, we drive from here to the South Coast and a night in a lovely old hotel with orchards and beach to play in, in the morning the Channel Tunnel, Drive and hotels through France over 3 nights, drive over the Pyrenees into Spain, last hotel night in Tarragona then finally home to Altea.  We are going to miss our Nana, the garden, the lovely green countryside AND Gail, Mr T and Ivy.

We are looking forward to seeing the boys in their harnesses.

Like Kari & JetEd we have the Snoozer.  I have 2 of the large ones and the "kids" love them because they can see (and hence) bark at everything.  I ordered the larges because Delilah is a standard, but we really could've gotten away with the smaller ones.  The seatbelt fits across the seat and then you tether their harness to the seatbelt.  We have used them for short trips like the vets and medium trips like 2 hours or less.  We'll be putting them to the test in a few weeks when we make the 8+ hour drive to North Carolina!

Good luck
Dawn
