Title: Dental Vaccine
Post by: David C. on July 19, 2010, 04:58:37 PM
Has anyone tried the Dental Vaccine, or knows someone that did?   The Zs had their dentals today (cleaning only, no extractions).   One of the options offered to me was to give them a Dental Vaccine.  In theory, it is supposed to retard the amount of tartar buildup.    Zeke, in particular, is extremely susceptible to tartar buildup.  He has to have annual dentals.    Zora is a bit better, but she needed a dental, too.

As the Zs get older, I'm going to be more reluctant to put them under anesthesia, so the Dental Vaccine sounds like a good idea.  On the other hand, I don't believe in "over vaccinating" the puppers.   I remember when the Flea Vaccine was the "new and improved" item, I declined it back then, and that turned out to be a good move as a lot of puppers got sick from the vaccine.

When Patches was a little over a year old the vet recommended to have her teeth cleaned so I had her teeth cleaned also recommended the dental vaccine so we did that too. The only other dog I had ever had the teeth cleaned was Gizmo my old Papillon never had a problem.I took Patches in early so she could come home that evening went and picked her up if you touched her anywhere she would yelp in pain ??? Vets were closed so thought she would sleep it off she was that way all night long she was doing allot of shaking also so I found a dog pain pill left over from Patches spay so gave that to her she sleep all night.Called the vets as soon as I could talked it over with them they could not figure it out ? The only thing different was the Dental Vaccine she never had the second shot she was suppose get. I also Googled Dog Dental Vaccine read up on it was not that impressed.
Patches just had another dental cleaning did not have any problems at all so about every two years or so looks like she will need a dental cleaning even though I try very hard to brush her teeth everyday.
Speaking of teeth Patches teeth are very different from other dogs she has two very back teeth side by side the second tooth is just very short.??? Will try to wrangle my old vet to look at them next time we are in for shots or exam.

Thanks.  I've been leaning against the vaccine.   I just remember when they had the Flea Treatment Vaccine that was supposed to be the end-all be-all, and a lot of dogs got sick.

It almost sounds like Patches has a baby tooth that never fell out.   Rudy-angel had a similar issue with his incisors.   The baby tooth would not come out.   We had to have it extracted.   I took care of neutering him at the same time.   Poor guy went into the vet thinking he was getting a tooth pulled and woke up with more than just a tooth missing!

Brandy was given this last year and I was not happy with it - or let me re-phrase, I was upset with my vet - they did not explain it to me - they just gave it to her ! and because they failed to tell me about the follow up shot, I think it was 3 weeks later.  I had asked for some information after I found out about it, and did some on line research.  She also got a huge whelp on her neck where they gave her the shot, and she has never had a reaction to any other shot before.
I have not seen that it helped.

When Rudy had his dental, I explicitly told them - NO VACCINE !

David, who is in your profile picture?  I keep doing a double take - could be Sol and Kirby!

It's Zeke and Zora.   Zora is a chocolate/tan, just like Kirby.   Zeke is a blue/tan, although he looks more like a dark grey in the piccy.
