Title: Rays Needed for Earl - UPDATE
Post by: DeeanDave on June 20, 2010, 08:56:52 AM
At 5 am, this morning, I took Earl to the Pet Emergency Clinic.  It's still the ongoing problem that I posted about earlier...he has had a really rough week. He had a few days of marked improvement, then yesterday, things changed.  Yet he was still alert, playful and happy.  This morning, however, he started to cry more.   More xrays and blood work was done this morning....xrays showed nothing except for a irritable tummy; his blood work was good with the exception of the hydration numbers.  This has turned into a mystery as to what is wrong.  So, he is staying at the emergency pet clinic/hospital all day today and tonight and is receiving intervenous fluids and a shot for anti-nausea and also pepcid to soothe the tummy.  At this point in time, he will have an ultrasound done tomorrow morning.  Our normal vet office doesn't open until Noon today and I decided I could wait until then.  I'm sure that they would have also kept him while the office was open to do intervenous fluids but then I would have had to take him downtown to the clinic for an overnight stay.  We'll get reports on him throughout the day from the pet clinic/hospital.  I felt so bad leaving him.....his look was so sad.  My emotions have gone over the edge.....I'm upset....and the tears keep coming this morning......lack of sleep, worry.....

Update as of 1:30 pm:  I called the clinic a bit ago. Doc said that Earl was doing great and resting comfortably. They are giving him fluids intervenously. Also, Doc said that upon a more indepth study of his blood work from this morning, that there are signs of allergen cells so he has had an allergic reaction to something which can affect his tummy and also cause dehydration. His dehydration levels were high. This doc said to call back this evening after 7 and talk to the Doc who admitted him. He said that she would likely do more blood work to get another reading and we will go from there.

Update as of 8:00 pm:  Called the clinic. The doc indicated that she is so glad that we are having the ultrasound done tomorrow morning.  She said that he is very chipper and happy except when he throws up.  But he did have two throw ups in a row at 2 pm and one again at 4 pm.  They are taking him out every four hours to do his business.  I will call again between 6 and 8 am, to see how he did during the night.  After the ultra sound in the morning, the specialist will call our vet to discuss the outcome of that and then call us.  They will let us know when we can pick him up.  Sure could use some mega rays for a positive outcome!

Sending major rays Earl's way!

Have his stools been bloody?   Max-angel once suffered from a very nasty bout of hemhorragic gastroenteritis,  triggered by an encounter with a toad.   Had I not gotten him to the emergency vet, he probably would have died from dehydration.    Both Max and Rudy-angel were scavengers and would frequently get nasty tummy bumpers that could be quite painful and would mirror the hemhorragic gastroenteritis symptoms, although not as severe as Max's worst case.   Almost always treating them with metraozinadole or sulfaszalamine (sp?) would clear them up.   It got to the point where the vet didn't even need to see them once I described the symptoms.

Hi David,  No bloody stools for Earl...all are normal.  He is doing the little hack like something is tickling his throat and then he spews liquid out and any possible remenants of food that may be lingering in his tummy.  The docs on all of his visits...three from last week and this morning, have poked his tummy and he doesn't even flinch.  This morning you could see that he was not the most comfortable but he was not lethargic....very alert.

Just a possibility, but could he have ingested too much foam and fuzz and cloth in that chair that he tore up a couple of weeks back?  Geez, this is disturbing and sad.  Sure hope that the ultrasound sees something the docs aren't.  Poor Earl.  And POOR MOM and DAD.  This is certainly a mystery.

Loads of healing rays and prayers to Earl the JD.

Sandi, no large pieces as the xrays didn't show anything.  The ultra sound would show anything tiny that the xray couldn't pick up.  He destroyed the chair on the 5th and didn't get sick until the 14th. When I raised that concern with the Docs, they said that a reaction to that would have been an almost immediate problem but who knows.  I posted an update in my original post.

This is so strange Dee! And of course it is the weekend so we have to wait longer.  :doah: Was his stomach distended? Does he pick up things and eat them regularly, lint, stuff from the ground or floor? Did he have any trouble going #2? I am just wondering if he has a partial blockage that built up slowly so you didn't see the symptoms right away like you might have otherwise. Did they mention intussusception (sp?) of the bowel? Hopefully you will have the answers and treatment tomorrow but I know it's miserable waiting and wondering. He's where he needs to be right now he's in good hands and will be safe! It's great news that he is looking good today I'm sure he'll be just fine as soon as they can figure out what is going on. He's probably taking it all better than you are!

It sounds like the vet is on the right track, so hopefully they will be able to pinpoint the source of Earl's allergies and get him going on the road to recovery.

I was wondering if it might be an allergy thing.  Porky does the "hack" when his allergies are bad.  Sometimes he has whitish stuff come out, but not always.   I sure hope they figure out how to help him.  Its so scary when they go through stuff like this.   Porky's food allergies were mostly indicated by gastritis, not the hacking and wheezing though.  We're praying for Earl and that you find some answers during the ultrasound tomorrow.
