Title: Oh Jade!!!
Post by: doxielady5569128 on June 16, 2010, 02:07:54 PM
My brother's dog has done it now.  She is constantly eating things she shouldn't couches, chairs, shoes, you name it, she'll eat it!!!  Well today my brother came home from the store after buying nicotine gum. He's trying to quit smoking.  The little bugger stole the package out of his hand and ate 2!!!       She immediately vommitted, which is a good thing.  My brother rushed her to the vet and she is now getting charcoal put into her stomach and some iv fluids in hopes that she will survive this.   The vet said they weren't too concerned since she only got 2 pieces, but that if she ate more she would be dead for sure.    :doah:    She will be there all afternoon and overnight to make sure she doesn't suffer any ill effects.

My brother feels just awful about the whole thing.  Jade is sneaky and will get things from up high, out of boxes, cupboards, etc...   They basically need to get cupboard locks and lock doors.  She has learned to let herself out whenever the electric meter reader comes.   :doah:   She gets exercised a lot at least 3 hours a day, she has stimulating toys, and plays  with Bandit and my mom all day.  We're running out of ideas on how to keep this crazy girl safe from her curiosity.   She eats things to discover what they are I think.   That's what a behaviorist told my mom.  Its not a naughty thing, she just wants to know what it is.   :dontknow:

Anyway... she could use some rays.  My brother said he would call if she gets worse, but if he doesn't I'll know she's okay.

Sending HHHHHHH's & PPPPP's for Jade!!!
Hope she is better soon.
Zack was always eating stuff he wasn't supposed to when he was young. He got to realize that if mom puts you in the tub and climbs in with the turkey baster in her hand   we are going to be throwing up.  It didn't stop him.

She is doing just fine!!!  We had our internet receiver get hit by lightning last night or I would have updated this much earlier.   We'll have to try the "drop it" command with her.  Great idea!!  Now, we'll see how long it takes her to catch on to what that means.   :doah:

Example of drop it out on the medical scooter walking the dogs Patches picked up one very dead smushed frog I told her to drop it and she did, another time it was a chicken leg some one threw out of a car I guess again told her drop it and she did. The command works very well have used it to get a dead squirrel from them in the back yard. If I see something before they do I tell them to leave it they will not touch it so the training works I train all my dogs when they are pups I play the trade game also put a treat in my hand tell them to leave it when they do they get a treat from the other hand.Make the training fun they usually learn fast.

Whew, thank goodness all is well with Jade!  :thumb:  That could have been really bad. It took me a minute to "get the picture"   :verdict:  when I read Merion's post about Zack and the turkey baster, but then it was an LOL moment! Papbouv is so right that "drop it/leave it" is a very necessary command for the furkids to obey; I'm sure it's saved all of us at times. Considering our furkids stubborn streak and iron-man jaws, you never want to have to try to pry anything out of their mouths, and dachsies aren't alone in jaw strength. My dachsies would have to think about it sometimes as to whether or not they thought giving something up was fair, but I would just passively hold onto whatever they had and repeat "drop it" calmly until they figured out that I wasn't going to be the one to give up. The "consideration phase" got shorter and shorter over time and after while all it took was a sharp "ah!" if they had a no-no and they'd put it down for me to dispose of.

OOOOOooo they should play the hunting treat game! Sounds like she just likes looking for things! Tell them to hide treats in interesting places (not places that will encourage her to open cupboards or anything though) and maybe that will distract her from going for the things she shouldnt. But still satisfies her want to snoop for yummies!
