While I'd say all my dachsies have been fairly intelligent, Zora, by her submissive nature, sometimes seems like she is not on the ball quite as much as Zeke, or Rudy-angel or Max-angel. Well, she showed us up recently.
Zeke won't always eat his kibble, especially in the AM. If he leaves his food bowl abandoned for too long, we start hearing snarfing sounds, which is indicative that our little chocolate/tan chowhound Zora is going to town. We don't even have to see her. As soon as we hear it, a loud "ZORA!" usually stops the raiding.
Zora figured out that Zeke eats his morning kibble a few bites at a time. So, instead of trying to snarf the whole thing in one fell swoop, she has now imitated Zeke's practice of eating a piece of kibble or two at time...but only with Zeke's food. Zora still snarfs her own food. By "flying under the radar", she has been able to eat Zeke's breakfast without us catching on for a couple of days. Eventually we did catch her, and now, we pull Zeke's food dish once he loses interest.
Zeke is the only dachshund I have ever met who is completely unmotivated by food.
Hope she does not gain allot of weight being sneaky with her brother's food I have the same problem really have to watch out for Buddy's big food bowl. Patches will stand on her hind legs to get into his bowl she is starving all the time or so she thinks sounds like Zora feels that way too.Maybe its just the girls wanting food all the time.?
Zora is definitely a chow hound, probably more so than any of my dachshies, and that is saying a lot! Zora was about 15 pounds when I got her. I put her on a diet and have been able to keep her weight between 13 and 13.5 pounds, which for Zora is perfect. She is slightly larger than a typical miniature dachshund. I like to call her a "jumbo miniature".

Nice, very nice. I like that.
WOW. That's using her noodle. amazin'. :apls:
Zeke and Millie sound like two of a kind. And Zora and Murphy as well :thumb: Murphy has learned to wait until we're paying attention to something else and he hoovers up Millie's food before we can stop him. We've started feeding Millie on top of the coffee table or a desk so he can't get to it. :2funny:
This really gave me a laugh. I thought immediately of one my dachsies, Dara, at the Bridge now for a few years but still thought about and missed every day. Like most of this breed, she was a barker and she always had to have the last word. I've always spoken to mine just as if they were people and though they were almost never swatted, I used to threaten it if I were preoccupied when they were barking excessively. I would tell Dara, from a different room usually, "one more sound and I'm coming after you" and silence ensued --- for a few seconds. Then you would hear a soft "woof" -- just one -- from under the dining room table, where she knew I couldn't get to her before she could escape......... :doah: :chairfall: Years before Dara, the only male dachsie I've ever been owned by was the only one I've ever known that would walk away from food when he'd had enough.
Zeke is a dachshund right?? The whole...not eating his breakfast is throwing me off!
Girlies are more stealthy than you boys. Personally I just but in to Olivers if mum's not arround.

Maybe it is a Zeke thing.
My Zeke could have had food down all day and just eaten what he needed. Then we got Zelda--her only motivation was food. She would inhale hers then shove Zeke out of the way and go after his. We finally put him in a crate and her outside the crate to encourage him to eat it all at one time and keep her out of it. She did get smart enough to start pulling on the blanket in the crate to tip the bowl and pull the food out a few pieces at a time but by then Zeke had wised up and had eaten most of it already.
Merion & the ZZ's
I tell Buddy all the time your sister Patches is going to eat your food he does not care its funny I tell Buddy to sit and sometimes tell him speak before feeding him.He is not into speak he knows the word but just doesn't like too do it,Patches is in the house just talking up a storm hey Mom I will speak give me his food now.
Clever girl! That really is smart, amazing the things they can reason out in their cute little heads.
That's hilarious! I can just "hear" Zora. Seriously, these dogs are way more intelligent than we give them credit for. Kirby is like Zeke - if he has a choice between kibble and hugs he'll pick hugs every time. Completely unmotivated by food. Today when we came home I brought salmon dog treats, and when we let the dogs out of their kennel, Sol sniffed the treats out immediately. Kirby just ran around with his red bone, happy as can be. I even put one under his nose to sniff but he just wagged his tail and looked at me like "Isn't this a cool toy Mom?" He does like strange things - the other day he swiped a radish that I dropped on the floor, and I thought for SURE he'd spit it out. Nope. CHOMP CHOMP, down it went. And he will pick a pretzel over a dog treat any day. Sol.....well, Sol wants the pretzel AND the dog treat..... :nana:
Fin is the same way about food. He doesnt really care. Well, i guess it depends what it is. He dances like a madman for the cat food. But if we feed him, he will eat a bit, pounce a toy, come give us a kiss, maybe go eat a bit more. Then the cat tries to eat his soft food and THEN he acts like he wants it. But yeah, if he thinks my boyfriend and i are having more fun then eating is, he will abandon his food in a second.
Unless its peanut butter. Wild cats couldnt rip this dog away from PB.
:thumb: Way to go Zora ! Girls Rule !
