Title: dog fight--a bad one
Post by: Leslie on May 30, 2010, 09:54:46 AM
On Friday night Loki and Zuzu were hunting mousies in the rock wall. Loki had her snoot in  a crevice and  Zuzu came up beside her Loki gave her a little air snap and before i could get Zuzu outta rhere she came up beside Loki again and Loki ripped into her like i haver never seen.

So of course I panicked and did EXACTLY WHAT I KNEW I SHOULDN'T DO.    :verdict:   I stuck my hand in there to separate them and Loki bit me full force on the arm.  She sank both her jaws into me up to her gum line.  I ran into get DH, who got a blanket over them and finally separated them.  My arm was pretty chewed up so my BIL -- who lives nearby-- took me to the ER.  No stitches for me, but 6 good punctures and it feels like someone hit me with a hammer and then an ice pick.

Meanwhile, DH took Loki to the vet for a nasty split in the webbing of her foot. She got stitches. (Zuzu is fine.)  The vet told us that Loki has an eye infection, so maybe--in addition to the prey drive and the diminished sight and hearing, Zuzu stickin' her nose in Loki's face--that was the tipping point.  but i gotta wonder--is she trustable?

So here we are--my arm's in a sling and Loki's got a bandage and i am here to tell you that vicodin only sounds fun.  it's hard to puke when you only have one hand.

so, po pitiful us.  :crybaby2:

OMG Les! How scary! You poor thing, you really took one for the team I'll bet you (and Loki) will be pretty sore for a while. It sounds like Loki didn't realize what was happening or what she was doing, and Zuzu had to be going..."Say, WHU...???"  Which arm was it I suppose your dominant one...:doah:

Awww Leslie you poor thing! I'm sure you're right that the combination of eye infection and being mid-hunt made Loki behave out of character - you know her better than anyone so will quickly pick up on it if she's out of sorts and there's any sign of her being grizzly.  Take good care of yourself and mend quickly.

ps I just came across pictures the other day of me sitting on your floor with Loki when we visited all those years ago!!

 I know this sounds like closing the barn door after the horse is out, but next time try grabbing them by the scruff between the shoulder blades.  I have had Dr. Leaky get snappy with Merlin, only to find himself hanging in the air like an overgrown puppy being carted off by his mama!! :thumb:

That bite could take a while to heal - feel better soon!  And smoochies to both the WWE fighters!! :comfort:

NO--not dominant one.  We were talking about your visit b/c that's was the first fight they ever had.  Zuzu usually starts it by being possessive.  I'm feeling ten times better but ole' Loki is really milking it--she won't even EAT.  not even CHEESE.

Wow, I am so sorry about the fight, but glad you are okay.  Once about 3 months ago Kirby went apesh*t at Sol over some treat that had been kicked around the house for at least a week.  No idea what provoked him (other than the fact he is stinky baby dog) but it took Jim and I and two blankets to get them separated.  Not sure what I'd have done if I was home alone.

Hope everyone heals quickly!

The only fights I've ever helped break up were pit bulls (and once a pit bull/doberman tangle) my pit bull owner friend will have one person per dog take the dogs back legs but not pull as the dogs are usually attached so it would rip the bite wounds worse, she has you push the dogs toward each other a bit and hopefully they will let go to re-grip and at that point pull them apart. If she doesn't have help (or sometimes even if she does) she will take the dogs by their collars and pull up so front feet are off the ground until they lose their breath and lets go, then pulls them apart. But like Roberta said we wouldn't want to do these things with a doxie, water hose would work I'd think! Or the blanket method used on Sol and SBD!

Sheesh Leslie!  How scary is that and I KNOW those angry bites HURT!!!  Did she at least look contrite afterwords?  Dolly bit me once (she was getting her butt squeezed at the time) and she truly looked mortified afterwords.  I hope everyone is friends and again and that you're feeling better.

Quite honestly, I could see this very easily happening with Bonnie and Maddie....with Bonnie being the biter and Maddie the bitee.  Bonnie has a short fuse and can remind us all that she's really just a little domesticated wild dog who can go back to her wild roots now and then.
