Title: Ivy still has her upper baby canine teeth
Post by: Gail on May 23, 2010, 01:53:16 PM
Did anyone else have this?  Her adult canine teeth came in just fine but her baby ones are still there and very firm, tucked in right behind the permanent ones - think she may need to learn to floss! She'll be 10 months in a couple of weeks.

I would have the vet look at her mouth. I'm thinking the baby ones might have to be pulled for the adult ones to place themselves correctly.

I've seen this many times and it's somewhat common. They will have to be pulled at some point because they are food traps that will cause excessive tartar build up. I would suggest tug-o-war with the rope bone, they may come out on there own like that.

That happened to Rudy-angel, too.  I ended up doing the extraction and getting him neutered at the same time.   Poor guy thought he was only going in to get his teeth pulled.   I imagine he was none too happy when we woke up to find that he had more than baby teeth missing.

Some times the vets have to help at 10 months you sure do not want the baby teeth displacing the adult teeth.Good Luck, remember any time they are under is a good time for a toe chop.

 :icon_study: O.K., let's review:

Ed - Hmmm . . . go to da V-E-T, get fussed over, knocked out, wake up, go home to lots of snuggies, "I'm sorry"s, and tweets.  OR - play tug of war 'til your teeth are ripped out one by one, by the roots.  Any questions? :thinik:

David - Poor Rudy, you coulda just told him he needed a REAL DEEP ROOT CANAL!! :dontknow:

Hi Gail

It´s very common in true kaninchen size and some miniatures.  Islay had hers surgically removed at the vets and has perfectly aligned adult teeth.  A persistent baby tooth usually causes displacement of the adult teeth if not removed in time.  Frozen yogurt is great after the op....

Thanks guys, we play a lot of tugging games and she has chewies all of the time to gnaw on (rubber and rope toys) but they are firm as can be and snuggled right in behind nicely aligned permanent canines. Yes, the thing that concerns me is the baby teeth being so close to the permanent ones will be acting like a big plaque trap over time and her gums may suffer. I will book an appointment for when she isn't in season any longer. She is ever so good in letting me do things to her just like her big brother, I am constantly playing with her tootsies or her ears or her mouth so that she doesn't bother about being messed with LOL. I've always cleaned Tris and Holly's teeth of tartar once or twice a year with dental scalers - I perfected a dachsie head-lock position but you don't get too many chances to get the tartare off before there's a wrestling match.  Ivy's good at having her toe nails clipped too so she is in pretty good shape as I trim them up as necessary while she pretends to be a princess having a manicure. It's a shame having to consider a general anaesthetic for the removal of these teeth but I'll ask the vet about all of the options, perhaps it will be ok to just keep cleaning and flossing for a while.

Porky's baby upper baby canines never came out on their own either.   We had our vet remove them when he went in to get neutered at 6 months old.   In fact, I had no idea that they hadn't fallen out yet until the vet called and asked permission to remove them so his adult teeth had the room to grow.   Good luck getting those baby teeth out.
