Hi everybody,
I have a new doggy here. Thursday I adopted Rupert from SCAR (Southern Comfort Animal Rescue). Scott, one of the volunteers brought him here late Thursday. Rupert is an adorable black and tan boy! He is so sweet! He loves to be held and talked to. He also loves the yard. I am lucky that I have a fenced yard. He is outside right now. There are birds here and we saw a squirrel this morning. I am going to leave his name Rupert as this name suits him perfectly.
We have a few housetraining issues and so we're going to have to work on them. He does know already how to stand at the door and ask to go out, but he hasn't gotten that together with actually going yet. He barks when he wants to come back in. Friday we took him to PetsMart to buy a harness and a leash. He loves to ride in the car! I am thrilled that he is here finally. It has been a long time since Little Bit was here.

Hi Rupert
We're so glad you're here now you found your forever home xxxx
We're two mini smoothies, Tristan and Ivy, living in England (tho Gail and Tris always point out they are Scottish). Tris is 10 and Ivy is 9 months old. Mr T is very laid back and snuggelriffic while Ivy is a general menace with a very cute smile that gets her out of trouble, she too loves a snuggle but she is often tooo busy to stop for long.
Welcome Rupert, we look forward to seeing piccies of you and hearing your stories xxxxxxxx
He sounds adorable! How old is he? It sounds like he's got the general idea - which is a BIG plus. Use the same word to let him out. Use the same word to have him go. You can't praise him enough when he goes. Treats with the praise wouldn't hurt. Hopefully you won't need them, but they have belly bands for boy dogs. That way if they go, it's in their 'diaper.'
Congradulations on the new baby...and getting a rescue dog is always the right thing to do.
Two thumbs up for you. :thumb: :thumb:
Oooooh! I'm sooooo happy for you! Rupert (love the name) sounds too too adorable. Oh, excuse me. 'Bout forgot to introduce myself and my girlies. I'm Sandi, owned by 12 year old Madison (sadly not quite here, mentally, due to doggy dementia) and 11 year old Bonnie (Bouncy) who is very lively and can be a bit dominant but very snuggly......on HER terms. I'm looking very forward to cute Rupert stories!

Hi everybody! Rupert and I thank you for nice warm welcome. Rupert is 2 years old and he is a shorthaired black and tan dachshund. (did I say that already?) I have decided to train him to use a pad in the house so that I won't have to deal with the weather outside. Now the question is: How do I teach him to use the pad? I have already chosen one of his favorite spots and I have put a pad on there, but he has picked new favorite places and he goes on them instead.
I have let him outside for a little while. He seems to be contented out there now.
As I said earlier in this post, I chose to teach him to use a pad inside so that we wouldn't have to deal with the weather (right now it is fine, but there's the rain, heat, cold, and dark coming so that is why we (I) decided that he should use a pad in the house. That way, he can go and I can dispose of the pads and put down clean ones. However, how to stop Rupert from using the floor? Any helpful (or not) suggestions? :) We need your help in this. Pleeaassse!
 Here it is from Auntie Bernadee, a.k.a. papbouv:
"Dachshunds are more difficult to train in the housebreaking department I think the reason is because they are so low to the ground. It is a absolute must that you go out with them every time for the above reason. I know it is a PIB to go out each time whether it is a little puppy or an adult dog but it is well worth it in the long run to have dogs that will go potty on command.Great for rain, cold, snow,& if on a trip.
Puppies have such a short attention span you take them out they forget why you put them out a leaf can blow by that's it off they go to chase the leaf then when you bring them back inside they remember they have to go, then they go where ever they are.
When you put them on a 6 ft leash stand in one spot it gets boring for the puppy then they usually go potty. If you put a word with it same word each time they will soon learn to go when you tell them to depending on the age of the pupper. When they go you PRAISE like it is the best thing you ever saw that way they know they did good. Younger Pups need to go out more often do to the fact their bladders are smaller like everything else is smaller + they are babies than dogs. Puppy schedule is like when waking up from all night in the crate, naps, eating, playing & about every hour.If they do not go they either need to be crated or tied too you.The more accidents in the house the long it takes to house break them sorry marking in the house is a no-no not acceptable at all.I have had 4 males in the last 30 years or so they never marked in the house it is not allowed. One of my males lifted his leg to mark a chair in the dinning room I just happened to come around the cornor had a towel in my hand I popped him in the butt with the towel told him no never did it again. For dogs that do mark get a belly band until you can get them trained if there are 2 males train one at a time which is hard to do because they trying to out do each other.Back to house training of course everyone knows to clean all accidents with a product designed for pet urine & poop also a black light does work to find any traces you have missed.Hanging a bell on the door you take them out to go potty also works you have to ring the bell each time you go out then after some time goes by the dog or pup should do it. Remember Dogs & puppies are like a person from a forgin land not knowing English or whatever you speak. Do not hit,Rub their nose in it does not help may make the afraid of you just clean up and keep trying. Good Luck"
It's the best post going on hous training. Just substitute "piddle pad" for outdoors and you should have it. :thumb:
Good Luck!
Auntie Karen - papbouv's biggest fan!! :exactly:
Thank you so very, very much for saving that Auntie Karen since I hunt peck type takes me a long time to type long posts so thank you again.
Now what I would do to train the dog to use potty pads which I'm not a big fan of confuses the dog if you want them to go outside. If you are really wanting to use the pads try this wipe some of the dog's urine on to a pad keep that one pad down just place a new pad on top if he goes on the pad Praise the dog like it is the greatest thing you have seen.Keep the dog tethered to you or crated then he can not go use the areas he wants to use as you stated. Clean those ares he likes to use with some of the Pet enzyme stuff like Natures Miracle. If he has an accident just pick him up while he is going put him on the pad, was he house trained to go outside since he is two years old??? He may have been scolded or worse for going in the house so he may be very confused of what you want may take allot of time and patiences. Good Luck
Hi everybody,
It is my sad duty to say that I have sent Rupert back because Scott said that he (Rupert) was confused by the change in where he was to "go". If he had only not been already housetrained to go outside! I wish that he had not been, but that's nobody's fault and like I told Scott, 99% of people would want that instead of having a dog who "goes" inside. I will say that Rupert was delighted to see Scott and Scott said to me that he would look for a dog for me and "we will find just the right match" (Scott's words). It is lonely here today without Rupert.
placing the right dog with the right owner is possibly the most important part of rescue work. You didn't have Rupert long enough to really work with him very much and it takes time to make the change you were trying to make.
but I will say, if you didn't feel right with Rupert, or you didn't think he would be the dog your looking for then you did the right thing by returning him quickly.
Be patient, they'll find the dog your looking for and get him to you.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Welcome Rupert!!!! So nice to meet you :hello2: :hello2:
Welcome Rupert! We need some pics!!!
