Whew! But thank goodness diverted......for Madison. Mommy, however caught it royally. Here's our poor, sad story.
Sweaters? Hardly ever use them, but in this case we're glad we did. Miss Madderoo was shivering last night, so papa Mark bundled her up in her sweater that velcros around the tummy. We had just eaten a little supper and I decided to make tea. My kettle isn't the best so I reached for a hot pad and started to pour the almost boiling water when the spout decided to burst forth with water in a not so steady, controlled stream. Hot water gushed all over my left hand and onto the floor. I looked down, and of course, the Roo was right under my feet. Forgetting my pain, I bent down to make sure she didn't get any of it. At first, I thought she had escaped harm but then she started screaming bloody murder. I, quick as I could, tore off her sweater and THANKFULLY no liquid had penetrated her skin. She was fine, just shocked when she felt the water on her sweater. I was sooooooooo relieved. Unfortunately, I didn't fare as well. I've got scald burn on my fingers. What a horrible night I had last night. I ALMOST went to the ER but finally was able to control the pain a bit. It hurt so bad that I was literally throw up sick. I've got big blisters on the back of my swollen fingers.....which I've heard you're not supposed to pop. I had my hand in a wrap but it feels better out of the wrap. As you see, I can type, so I can bend my fingers.
Stayed home from work today (since I didn't sleep all night last night AND I couldn't face a shower this morning). Got my neo-sporin and yes, I'll be just fine. I'm just sooooo thankful that my little baby Roo is fine. That's the main thing.
Sure doesn't put me in the mood to cook. Just called Mark at work to have him pick up pizza. :)
PS...Wow! Bonnie acted very weird when all this happened. When she heard Maddie scream, she didn't go to comfort her. She wanted to attack her! Mark scooped up the Roo and Bonnie tried to get at her. I grabbed Bonnie and calmed her then we slowly put both girls on the floor. Bonnie walked around Maddie in her attack stance and Maddie just stood there with her hackles up. After a while, everyone calmed down. This is in Bonnie's history that she HATES loud noises and will react either by cowering or fighting. (sigh) Do any of your dachsies react negatively when their puppy pals yelp?
Oh my Sandi I am so glad you are both ok...at least pretty much that sounds like a nasty burn! Things can happen so fast in the kitchen that is why I try and stay out of them as much as possible. That would have scared me to death to to hear Maddie screaming and thinking she was horribly burned, I guess for some of them water is almost as bad lol! Sounds like a very exciting moment for your whole household, strange how Bonnie reacted, when Hallie hears a yelp she acts like it's her puppy in distress and goes over very worriedly to make sure everyone is OK but I have seen dogs attack and I know it has to be very scary. Take care of your hand I don't know a lot about burns but I think you are right about not popping blisters and no butter right at the time of course too late for that now anyway. That has got to hurt!

Please be very careful with burns they can get infected quick,I thought I had a second degree burn also when the spoon flipped out of a pan with very hot gravy. When I went to work a RN dragged a doctor over to look at my hand it was a third degree burn.Since I worked at a hospital where there are all kinds of germs and such I was told to wear a glove at all times OUCH.Hope you hand gets better soon feel for you they are very, very OUCHY glad the pupper did not get burned might check her skin once in awhile saw a show on Animal Planet about burns on dogs present differently than one would think.
Thank goodness you managed the sweater of, but your self get the blisters looked at as they infect easily, don't put cream on them as you only have to get it off later and that is painful, you can get sterile post op non stick dressings, but go see someone.
If there is a next time plunge them into icy water if you have it (frozen vegies still in bag into the water) as ice water is colder than ice or cold water,if not cold and hold them under there till they stop feeling hot.................can be half an hour change the water to keep it cold, yes part of body will freeze. What you are doing is elimating oxygen from the wound and cooling the area.
I got a steam burn at work and that's what the did, and it never blistered or scared.
On the pupper side, Emma once ran up the corridor and went to put her feet on the edge of the bath, but had to much momentum and went in, she was screaming, vet told me to get her into a cold shower so I had to hold her and get under the shower, clothed with awriggling dachie for 15 min.........she was OK, but never went into the bathroom again.
Bonnie might have thought maddie was going to hurt you.
Take care of your self
Oh my gosh, how scary...I am so glad you both are going to be okay! Just watch for infection. When Winston was yelping with his back, Zoe would go to him and nudge him as if to see if he was okay.
Gosh, that´s an awful thing to happen and must hurt like crazy. I think I´d get it looked at by a Doctor anyway, just to be on the safe side, burns can be tricky. Thank goodness the Roo wasn´t hurt ( I´d have been terrified too) if her skin is fine, maybe she was screaming seeing what was happening to you and Bonnie just panicked since both of you were panicked?
Take good, gentle care of yourself and those precious girlies too. Let Mark cook for a while....
How scary!!! I'm glad Madison is okay, but I feel awful you got burned so badly. One thing that helps is to take a white sheet and wrap it around the burn, keeping the sheet wet with cold water at all times. But, like everyone else says, you should see a doctor for a burn like that. They can turn serious very quickly. I hope it heals quickly and becomes less painful. Ouchie! :comfort:
:angel4: My border collie/lab mix Cooper-angel got badly burned when he was about two years old.
My oldest daughter, That G-d Awful Miriam, put on a skillet of oil and promptly forgot about it. I was at the table when smoke started billowing out of the kitchen. I rushed in, grabbed the skillet and opened the back door to take it outside. Cooper heard the door open and bolted past, jostling me. The oil sloshed out of the pan and landed on his rump. He took off into the yard SCREAMING!!
It was a terrible burn and took almost a full year to heal. I hope your hand heals soon.:comfort:
Auntie Karen
I am so glad that you and the Roo are ok! Have a good week-end! The 4 at my house says to give the Roo&Bon Bon a hug for them!

:2funny: You ARE kidding, right? In the 28 1/2 years that we have been married, Mark has cooked TWICE for me. Of course, give the man credit where credit is due. He does ALL the clean up. Don't remember the last time I washed the dishes. And we even have a dishwasher, but he'd rather do the dishes by hand. :dontknow:
Thanks everyone. It looks like it may not be so bad after all. I'm still blistery on my fingers but I'm being vigilant and so far, so good. Roo is just fine fine fine.
Gosh, Sandi!!! I hope your hand is a lot better now. Glad the Roo wasn't hurt.
Yikes! I am glad that your hand looks to be not so bad after all, but I am still sorry it happened - how scary and painful!
Hooray for the Roo being a-okay! *whew*
Yikes Sandi - glad you are both ok !!! Take care of yourself.
Rudy will act the same way Bonnie does - if someone cries, he will bark at them. Not known him to attack, but he doesn't want to be bothered with a fuss, I guess......
