Can a 14# Dachshund kill a Rat??? Patches seems to want to really bad but read where Rats can kill small animals????
It really depends more on their predatory instinct. I think catching it would be more of an issue than killing it. Most of my dachshunds will blindly charge their prey rather than try to stalk it. Inevitably, the prey gets away. A skilled dachshund should have no trouble dispatching a rat. In fact, in Hungary, the name they call the dachshund literally translates to "rat catcher". Even skilled, though, it is possible the dog could end up worse for the wear in the tangle.
On this board, it seems that the female dachshunds tend to have a lot more hunting prowess as they are patient enough to stalk their prey. I believe Jeri's Skeeter, who is well under 14 pounds has picked off 5 rats, making her a rat killing ace
My best hunter was Rudy-angel. The best he did was taking a tail off a rat. He never quite got the whole thing. Him and Max-angel made a good hunter-killer team. Zeke tries, but he is far too Keystone Cop-like to be an effective hunter. Zora is very maternal and only kills her toys.
I think they could, but I have to go with David that the girls are better hunters. Oliver boldly dashs barking etc after rabbits, while madam stalks.
Not that I am for rat catching by that means. with the boys I think it is a movement thing ..............see it chase it..............

Thanks do not know if he would help but she Patches usually has Buddy for back up if he is awake.
Tristan took to the stage earlier to demonstrate how to kill anything fuzzie to his baby sister. It might help Patches but I have to say that the only thing Tris has ever caught was a dead mouse on the compost heap that he brought for me to show how manly he was LOL. Tris is loving showing off to his baby Ivy all of the time!

Yep! Rats, mice, moles, snakes, baby rabbits, birds...
Cocoa would grab a rat behind the head and break its neck quickly. Then, she'd lay it down and paw at it as if to say, "get up and go again"...
The snakes were the worst...and the bunnies the saddest...
