Tulsa OK is usually about 47* in the winter goes up & down some but since 12/24/09 we have not been above freezing hardly at all.
My question is for people that live where it is very cold all the time this Thursday & Friday it maybe 0* with wind chills of -13 or 15* may even be lower than that.
Patches & Buddy both have a Fleece coat & a quilted coat with the wind proof type nylon on the outside. Buddy has the mule show Doberman ears he has a Fleece snood to help keep his ears warm. How long do you usually leave them out side when it is that cold???
We also have an extra furry friend from the Cement Yard behind us so far the little darling has ate mu Stainless Steel hose to my Dishwasher that was about a month ago then 4 days ago it ate the black hose to my Dishwasher the drain hose. Then 2 nights ago it ate the power cord to my refrigerator. OK it is not a friend want to put the little darling out of its misery, hubby put out poison behind the washer & refrigerator he say Patches cannot get to it but I'm not so sure.Patches sleeps in bed with me at night and Buddy sleeps in his bed in my bedroom I keep the door shut.Today we bought a gate to keep Patches out of the Utility room so that makes me feel a little better. Tonight Patches runs into the kitchen every chance she gets hubby also put Poison under the sink but the doors are shut to that area.Hubby also bought Rat traps going to put them in the utility room behind the gate.Hope we catch the little brat soon can not afford to keep replacing hoses and power lines. If they chew on power lines why does it not kill them.?
I know Patty lives in Alaska and Willy and Alex go out without any kind of extra coats.
We've been in the same cold grip temps haven't broken 32 degrees in several days and wind chills are in the 5 to 15 degree range. The Zs are only out long enough to do their business and head back in. Our friend who has an Akita will stay outside for hours.
Thanks my two shiver even with their coats on that was one reason I was asking guess they are spoilt wimps. I do make Buddy go out at night with Patches have heard there are coyotes around sometimes even when we live in the city.Do not want Patches to be a snack for one hubby says they could not get over the cement wall it is 6'ft or more tall i say they can clear that easy.
The wire hair foster I have seems immune to the cold. It was 17 last night and he took his chewy out on the back porch to chew on it for a while.
We get minus 30 degrees here. I don't even bother taking Parker out when it's that cold. We always have pee pads down in the laundry room. Even with a coat, his paws get cold and frost bite can happen in seconds.
When is "just" cold Parker gets down to business immediately and is scooped up and brought back in the house. No lingering or sniffing around. If he heads to the door as soon as we put him down, I assume he has used a pee pad, and bring him in immediately.
Here in Iowa, where we've had -30 below wind chills lately, we let the puppers out for 10 minutes or LESS. Most of the time, if it is colder than +15 degrees, one of us will go look for & call the pupper after about 5-7 minutes, or after about 3 minutes when the actual temp is like -12. In temps from 15 to 30, they can stay out pretty much as long as they like, but ours ARE longhaired dachshunds, which means that they have extra fur and furry foot protection built-in. :)
And, about the poison, one inherent danger of using poison is that when the mouse eats the poison, he can still happen to die where your pupper could have access and chew on the corpse--the rodent doesn't die in front of the poison container. It can take a while to die from the poison, and in this time, they could run to your yard, open areas of your house, even your pupper's bed! This gets the poison into your dog's system, and illness/death can occur. At one time, my son & I lost an "in/outside cat" because he ate a poisoned mouse somewhere outside (a neighbor had put out poison in their home, and the mouse died somewhere outdoors). Further cats after that were "indoor only"(except on a leash). I use well-baited traps when I have an extra "furry friend", I absolutely would never use poison on my property, and encourage my neighbors not to use it either. It's a danger to any pet who might decide to "bite a mouse".

Absolutely, which is why, even though I know there are rats in my garden I will not posion bait. ever. That bait smells wonderful to critters for a reason, too. and
if there's ANY chance that a dog can get to it--and I have seen pictures of a certain Scottish doxie lass climb a 12' hedge--THEY WILL GET TO IT.Don't take the chance. Get snaptraps. fast, effcient and ya never wonder if the deed is done. Just getcherself a long handled claw hoe and a DEEP bucket with a LID if you have to transport & drown a partially trapped rat. (I'm just sayin'...)
I had a rodent problem due to the clearing of a field behind my house. I didn't want to put out traps or poison, so I went to Home Depot and bought the electronic rodent repellers. They are wonderful. They don't bother the dogs and they completly got rid of the rodents. I really recommend them as they don't affect the pups in any way and get rid of the rodents without poision or traps.
Danni absolutely refuses to wear a sweater or coat outside. We haven't had much snow, but there is a spot right by the porch/ramp that is always clear and the boys used to use it, but does Danni , no way. Danni runs all the way to the flower bed by the gate does her business and then runs back, but here's the catch I can't stand by the door to make sure she doesn't stay out too long; if she sees me she doesn't do anything except run to the fence and back. So I have to watch her out of the kitchen window then wait until she barks to let her in. I don't let her stay out for more than 5 minutes if it's really cold, but if it's in the 30's as it has been she gets to stay out longer. Then if she won't come in all I do is yell carrot and greased lightening is on the porch.
Sam always wore his coat outside, Eddie refused and since he was a LH he claimed he never got cold. As for the rodent problem my Kitty Gizmo Angel used to take care of them, but Danni does love to hunt and hopefully she will switch to rodents and leave the bunnies alone.
Thank you one and all for the record I would not have Poison out for any reason but my say around here does not seem to account for much any more.Hubby is a stubborn old goat thinks he knows everything and is like talking to a wall.I have talked til I'm blue in the face does not do me any good I try to keep a super close eye on the Fur Kids.
Electronic rodent repellers they really do work ????
Patches is a long hair does not seem to get too cold does not mind the extra coat she likes to be under the covers so figured the extra coat would be ok.
We were in the house for 6 days & 5 nights during the Ice Storm about 2 years ago did you know a Doberman's teeth will chatter when they get really cold.Buddy and Patches seem to get cold easy think the Ice Storm is why once super cold they do not like it.Hubby lived in Iowa he hates the cold talked of moving to AZ but I say Hot is Hot would be too hot for me.
Thanks again
