Post by: doxielady5569128 on January 02, 2010, 12:52:28 PM
Dis is Porky Pie:

Iz had a scawy morning!!!     I was eatin' my food when all of a sudden I couldn't breaf!    :runaway:  My mama came running up behind me and whacked me right on da back.  Can you beweive dat?!   Dat didn't help me at all, den she started doing dis weird fing where she pushed on my tummy to try and get da food out.   Dat felt weird.    Dat wasn't working eidder.  So my daddy was running around getting my leash and getting ready to drive me to da hostipal down da woad.    Mama started rubbing my froat gently den I felt da food pinch me and I yelped and swallowed.   :apls:  Iz got my breaf back.   Since I fought I was in twubbles, I hid in my kennel and wouldn't come out when mama calleded me.     She hit me, and she neber does dat?!  What's a guy supposed to fink?   She finawy got me out wif a tweat and a bowl of water.  Den I gots cuddles fwom bof my mama and daddy.

So here's my advice for all you odder puppers.  Eben if you are starbing.....always CHEW yer food.  Odderwise, your mama hits you, pokes yer tummy, and dey freaten you wif da docktor.      Also, youz gets a sore froat and have to dwink water to help it.

Oooh Porky, so sorry about your trubbles.  I did the zact same thing last week.  I was eating like a little piggy (as usual....don't want Maddie to get my food) and suddenly I couldn't breathe.  Mommy rubbed my jaw to loosen any crunchies caught in my teeth and rubbed my throat and GULP!  I swallowed and was a-o-k.  It was scary though, but my mommy takes good care of me.

As soon as we can afford it, we are definately getting one of those bowls!!!   One thing that gets him to slow down is we taught him to sit and wait by his bowl and he has to stay sitting until we say "Go."  I have no idea why, but that seems to get his brain to engage and he will eat slowly and actually chew.   If we don't do it (like today) he inhales his food.   :dontknow:

glad to hear the little pooper's okay.  All ya gotta do is put a tuna fish can (full) in his bowl, that'll slow him down.  getcher yerself a CHEAP can o' cat fud. :-0 Of course, if it was Loki, she would gnaw through the can, too.

When i took my course one of the things they taught us was canine cpr.

You have probably seen the Heimlich maneuver done in people by wrapping the arms around the belly and squeezing. You can do the same in dogs, but there are different methods. One is to suspend the dog with his head pointing down. This sometimes helps dislodge an item stuck in the throat. You can also give the dog a sharp blow with the palm of your hand between the shoulder blades. If this does not work, you can try a Doggie Heimlich. You hold the dog around the waist and compress the abdomen with a fist several times just behind the rib cage. You then check the mouth to see if the foreign object has come out. You can repeat this maneuver several times

Glad all turned out OK. If you don't have a tuna fish can, one of those little tennis balls works too. Ilsa used to eat like that. Elli is close to needing something put in her bowl.

Thanks!  :thumb:  We had to do the doggie heimlich yesterday.  I don't think I was thrusting strong enough because the food didn't move.  I was worried about hurting Porky's ribs and stomach.  I'm just glad he got it out and I'm really glad you could explain how the doggie heimlich is done in case other puppers might need it.

I would put the can on the food just to be safe.  I had this problem with Zelda for 13 years.  I finally put something on her food and she never took it out and we had no problems.  Better safe than sorry. It is terrifying when they can't get it up or down and can't breath.
