Title: Getting your dog used to a baby....
Post by: doxielady5569128 on December 11, 2009, 10:52:00 AM
Before I cause any confusion....  NO I'm not having the baby.   My sister-in-law has asked me to watch my nephew for the first few months every evening while she goes to school.  So...I need some ideas of how to get Porky ready for a baby invading his space by March.   There will be a lot of stress in Porky's life over the next few months with a likely move and then the baby coming.   Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!  Porky has gotten a little possessive of me lately and get angry at my husband when he tickles my feet.  I guess Porky thinks he is hurting me???    We always make sure Porky gets told "NO", but I don't want any problems with Porky and Andrew.

Normally, Porky loves kids, but he hasn't been around many babies.    Obviously we will keep Porky away from Andrew until we know he is going to act.   I'm thinking it should be okay since it is evening and Porky likes to snuggle in the evenings.   Like I said, any ideas would be a major help!!!    I have a porcelain doll that sits in the corner, and Porky thinks its a real little girl.  He tries to sit on her lap  :doah:  and likes to give her bones.  Its funny, but I don't want him trying to sit on Andrew!!

I'll quit rambling now and see what ideas you all have.  Thanks!

Can you get some clothing Andrew has worn(not clean really you want the smell of the little kid on the clothes) lay them around where the child might be.Has Porky met Andrew before how did that work out then. Please make sure Andrew will not pull Porky's tail or ears depending on how old Andrew is Good luck oh if you can get a recording of Andrews voice and play it before Andrew comes that might help also.

Thanks for the ideas.  Andrew won't be born until March, but I can see about getting a blanket or something of his to let Porky smell.  Porky loves his mommy a lot, so maybe if he smells like her or comes in with her he will be fine.   Porky has been around babies before but, it has always been at someone else's house or at a park.   I don't know how he'll react to having a baby invade his space.  We will work hard setting up boundaries for Porky and hope that we have no problems.   I'm sure I'm just being a worry-wart, but I like to be prepared.

Yeah that's the best idea here getting Porky familiarized first with baby's smell. One thing can be set up too is a space or room that no dogs is allowed for the baby needs a quite time and Porkie could respect that space too.
