Title: Loki dental UPDATE minus one molar and all is well
Post by: Leslie on November 10, 2009, 06:33:16 AM
let's see if the little booger needs any teeth pulled.  I also asked the vet to examine her for any signs of calcinosis cutis--which is a specific skin symptom of Cushing's.  She has a multitude of skin tags, sub cutaneous fluid lumps and callouses, but  maybe there is evidence of this particular symptom. ( I am not a canine dermatologist!)   Then we will follow up on the bloodwork that was slightly out of range from last time.  Vet did not know if the numbers were out of range because of possible liver problems or periodontal disease.

Anyhoo, we started giving her 1.5 mg of Melatonin when she was having her night waking issues.  1.5 didn't do it, so I started giving her a whole 3 mg tablet.  This, and a little food, has consistently helped her sleep through the night.
Because I wanted this supplement to "wash out" of her symptom before the oral surgery, I have not given her the Melatonin since Friday.  On the whole, it seems like her system has been "re-set" so to speak, and except for some requests to pee in the early morning, no more night weirdness.

But! last night I saw exactly how much food, DH was giving the girls before bedtime, and it's no wonder Zuzu doesn't want her breakfast!  He has been giving a full meal -- so their food intake has increased a THIRD! :verdict:

More later!
*****************************Wednesday pm***************************************************
LOKI here: the NERVE!  First mom pretends to be asleep and then FORGETS my breakfast.  It was raining so I couldn't even make my proper deposit on the grass at the vets' office AND DEN dey made me wait until 1:30.  I called em all kindsa names and cried, too, but NOBUDDY FED ME.  I had a nice nap, and den I remembered I WAS STILL HUNGRY and the momma ain't 'llowed to come until 6. I am gonna poop on someone.

The vet reported that the skin thingees were more like doxie skin--owners of SHs will recognize the patches that seem greasy and dry at the same time--than calcinosis, which is pathgnomic only for Cushings.  He's pretty clued in having doxies himself and was the vet who did the original neck disc rupture diagnosis.  We will follow up with the liver test (for Cushing's) next month but we are instructed to back off the Metacam and give it two days, and not the third, etc, to see if she gets uncomfortable, then every other day.

I can't believe I get to take her home tonight.  DH was kinda lookin' forward to one evening with the PEST.

Thanks for the rays, everyone!
