Patches stays stuck at 14.4# I did get her to 12.5# once then over winter back up to 14.4# I do the green beans & carrots she gets 1/8th of a cup of Taste of the Wild Bison or Salmon in the am & pm. When we have leftover chicken breast I put a little back for Patches cut up about a measuring Tablespoon to go with her dry food. Now that it is not raining we go out on the scooter guess I need to walk her around the block even when I cannot take the scooter out. I do not know about this being able to feel the ribs on a dog to check if they are over weight do not ever remember being able to feel Patches ribs at any time even @12.5# OF course she thinks I'm starving her at all times but when they caught the squirrel last week neither ate on it guess they did not know they could??? Or is Patches just suppose to be at 14.5# since it seems like her spot all the time.Papbouv
That just might be her size, does she waddle? If she is still running around and doesnt seem to have troubles then maybe 14lbs is where she is supposed to be!
I have often wondered that myself she does not seem to waddle. I was going by the rib feel thing where you are suppose to be able to feel their ribs. Just trying to keep down back problems in the future for her.The way things are with hubby not working could not afford back surgery on her. Patches has her daddy wrapped around her little paw so he might cough up some monies if needed for her.Just do do not know.Guess I'm just a worry wart mommy when it comes to my fur kids.

I would agree with that statement
Does Patches feel solid? Eddie was around 15 pounds, but he was solid as a rock. So that might be just the right weight for her.
It is hard to say, if you can't feel her ribs I would think she would be a bit overweight? I can easily feel Hallie's ribs and she in my opinion at 12.5 lbs needs to lose about half a pound. But maybe she just doesn't put weight on over her rib area as easy I don't know...she eats quite a bit more than Patches, but is still always hungry I hate having to deny them food they probably really are hungry! I've seen very overweight dachshunds whose owners felt it was all solid muscle, but they were obviously too heavy. Patches may be ok though I often have wondered too how you know the optimal weight for each one. I'm not much help am I!
Yeah i can feel Finn's ribs fine too... But he has an ENORMOUS rib cage. He would have to be like 500 lbs to pad that thing up.
My thought is this-She started out around 14 lbs. You got her down to 12.5, but when she went back up, it was to the 14 lb range. If she is keeping it there and not continuing to go up, I would think that is where she should be. Like the others have said, she seems to be able to be active, and she feels well. It is different if you noticed that it is slowing her down. I've never really noticed how much I could feel Schatzi's ribs. She is at a great weight (well, she was until she decided to add a half pound or so), and I can feel her ribs, but not too much. If she were a long hair, it would be really hard to feel them!
Thanks for all the input suppose to be nice until next Monday & Tuesday rain again they say.I have been taking them out on walks while it is nice darn cannot go to the park tried today they are putting water lines in on the street I usually go down. Can not get the scooter over the Rail road tracks scared I will get stuck or damage the bottom f the scooter.Just have to keep on going to the Fair grounds that is about a three mile walk. Of course Patches rides & trots beside the scooter Buddy walks at all times.Patches may loose a bit before winter yet I just did not want her to go over 14# too much over winter wish she would bring the ball back when I throw it. She trails Buddy out and back. That helps with the exercise for her she misses her little friends next door they moved out there were three little dogs next door she would go up & down the fence.Really sad she goes and looks for them every time she goes out.
