Ahhh those grays that sneak in! Hallie is getting quite a bit mainly all in her tan markings on her face not really any in the black yet or paws. I hate hate hate it not that it looks bad it is actually kind of cute just what it means!!

My Winston is a "Stress Head" and Zoe is not.  Winston just turned 5 and is much more grey than Zoe...she hardly has any.  I was wondering if Winston's grey might be from dealing with back pain for years as the chiropractor said his back issues started years before the symptoms actually appeared.  I think that along with being stressful about everything makes Winnie look like Zoe's daddy!!  Could that be?

My Hemi (non-dachshund, mixed breed) is getting lots of white on his snout.  He is only 6.  I hate it for the same reasons you do.  He actually looks distinguished, but I can't bear to think of him getting older and where that will lead.

I must say, however, the frosting on those senior faces is just precious.

My thoughts are that it depends upon the dog's genetic make-up (just like us).  I don't believe that people who are prematurely gray are worried more often, they just inherited the trait.

Bambam was a red short-haired mini; but, by the time he was 14, he was nearly white.  We called him "pinky" for awhile because his red hair and white hair mixed caused him to look pink.

Patches was a brindle with red, tan and black blended on his body and very pronounced striping on his legs.  Now he's mostly white and black so some areas look black, some are white and some are mixed (gray).  He looks like a black & white smooth mini with very little red hair left.

Cocoa was a chocolate with red points.  Over the years the red points turned snow white; but, she was still chocolate with very few white hairs mixed in.

Ladybug was a beautiful black and tan long-hair mini until the day she died at age 13.  She never did develop much gray...just eyebrows...a little...

I agree with you totally Dianne. And interesting about the chocolate and tan that is exactly where Hallie is graying, in her tan but not her black.

Solly was a black and tan fellow.  He grayed in the tan spots which looked more like a white blonde than gray.  Looks like it might be the way the and tan's gray.  My red girl Heidi grayed on her nose and under her chin first then up around her eyes, but didn't gray on her paws where Solly did.  That's my experience with it.

It's definitely in the genes:

Max-angel, a clear red, developed a little "poof" of white at the tip of his snout around age 4.   Around 9 he began to get the "mask".   By the time his was 15, his fur was almost 50 / 50 white and red.

Rudy-angel was a darker red and developed the mask around age 7.  He also got the stress head, but the rest of his trunk remained free of grey hairs, although his color pattern changes as he got older.

Zora is an 8 year old chocolate tan.  Her tan points are whiting out, but the chocolate is still as chocolatey as ever.

Zeke is a 7 year old blue tan.   Because it is so hard to discern between the blue fur and grey hairs, Zeke doesn't appear to have any grey in him.   His tan points are still tan

Auntie Karen, you gotta get over the "faux" thing.  Like Popeye says, "I yam wot I yam." :bolt:
