Hey gang, Zuzu and Loki here. We are now official bona fide seniors at 8.5 y/o and 10.5 y/o
We want the rest of the senior dawgs to give a bark!
Les here: Both kids are a little slower, but Loki's showing more senility type issues, also I think her hearing and eyesight are both somewhat diminshed. For everyone out there who has --or has had--senior dawgs, what is the most challenging issue for you and what suggestions do you have?
All in favor of starting a senior health thread "sticky" give a paw's up!
Sumbudy jus' woke me up to put my paws in da air. :meme:
I always sleep wif my paws in da air. :sleepy2:
Does dat count?
Guinness :runaway:
dis is Parker and I am 2, does dat make me a senior. Ims very mature for my age. :dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow:
I hate to argue semantics, but I'd consider the 8 - 12 range more like "middle age" for dachsies. I don't think true Senior Weinerdom starts until after 12 years old.
Well my little 12 year old S.W. is quite senile. I think it would be nice to have a sticky for Senior/Middle Age issues.
I'm with David, my 8.5 is bouncing off walls. I'd probably consider mine Baby boomers.
Roberta
Sarge is 10 and 3/4 .....he'll be 11 in February 2010. He is slowing down in his "middle age".....Duggie is 5 and 3/4....he'll be 6 in December and I swear he has ADD........he can be so full of energy sometimes!

It is remarkable that she went senile that early. While he was definitely slowing down, I didn't see signs of true senility in Max-angel until he was past 15 years old. Rudy-angel, who passed just shy of his 13th b-day was still very sharp mentally.
Zora, who just turned 8 is having her tan points begin to white out, but otherwise isn't much different than when she was younger. Both Zs were spazzes when they were adolescents or early adults. They mellowed a bit, but are still far more rambunctious as a pair that Rudy & Max were by this time in their lives.
I'm white where I used to be red...I'm deaf...and I have no teefies...; but, I love my walkies, snacks, go-fer-rides, licking my hoomans and sleeping in the big bed.
I'll be 13 (although Mom thinks I may be older) at Christmas since December 23rd that was my "Gotcha Day"
Patches has not slowed down much and loves a good meal or walkies as much as ever. He's a sweetie pie and a lover...
Hey, that last picture and this one are a couple of years old. I still had a couple of teefies left and all of the red hairs are now white!
Dis is Diamond Polka Dot and I'm the Queen around here. I may be a senior gal; but, I'm not about to admit it. I am very active!
Dottie is a "zipper belly". She had her 3rd surgery in the past 2 years to remove a hernia and mammary tumors and will have the stitches out this weekend. Dottie had 7 litters of fine registered puppies before the AKC kennel dumped her into rescue because she couldn't have any more puppies.
She has landed well and enjoys being here; but, she's the worry-wart of the pack.
Well, someone has to worry about this bunch!
Yea, well Dottie girl, this is the dachshund equivalent of an old folks home! The vet says we can fund our own wing
You have to be diligent to make sure the fence is sound nothing worse than a old dog getting out hearing not as sharp easy for them to get lost and hit by cars and such.Maybe a little warm water over the food to make it smell better,When out on walks need to sometimes go their pace and maybe not as far.Extra cushy beds around the house.Know most of you know all this but doesn't hurt to have reminders.
I am holding my paw up - Dis is Brandy. I am 13 1/2 yrs old.
Dis is Rudy. I am 9 3/4 yrs old and they call me a senior at that vets office :( Guess I am.
(Rudy has really slowed down in the last year and has kicked his whining up to the upmost annoying level :2funny: If mom doesn't jump 2 feet in 2 seconds.....it gets louder :verdict:
Brandy is not much different than she has been for years. She is still a snuggle bunny and gets a wild hair every once in a while and zoomies. She keeps BOTH boys in line with a yap-yap :thumb: )

Barb, Sargey has kicked up his whining also to the upmost annoying level.....think Rudy and Sargey have been talking behind our backs?????? He can really become obnoxious about it!

Well, there must have been a conference call in past few months regarding the seminar Senior Whining, How to Drive Your Slaves Crazy.
Clifford is still limping along at almost 15 1/2. He falls over a lot and the eyesight is kinda dim, but the mind is still sharp when he decides he wants to hear me yelling at him. Clapping my seems to be the best way to get his attention. The neighbors probably think I'm nuts standing in the yard applauding at him. I've been giving him rimidyl a few times a week for the past few months for chronic neck and shoulder pain, but that has not been working so well lately. So starting last Sat we switched to a dosing of prednisone for a couple weeks to see if that helps push it back.
So sorry to hear about your neck and shoulder pain! The prednisone should take care of it; but, don't overdue.
Ditto on the whining thing...Patches has started whining and begging at dinnertime and he never used to do that! It's like he's trying to say, "Hurry-up Ma, I'm hungry!"
Zack is checking in at 15 years & 7 months. Dad says I been doin that whinnen too. It used to score me treats all the time but it isn't workn any more :dontknow:. I think mom has been talkn to him.
When he gets fed up he sends me in by mom to bug her. :angel4:
Zack
You should hear the Roo right now as I type. She is QUEEN of the whiners. Oh my ears! Bonnie is my quiet girl.
This was our beloved senior wiener, Oscar (yes, also named Oscar). We had little red Oscar then adopted senior Oscar, nicknamed Oscy. We lost Oscy in March 2009 to heart disease. Sadly, he was only with us for 10 months. A truly wonderful loving little dog. We miss him.

Patches is completely white all over? With no teeth left and a new white coat, Patches must be adorable!
which is a mixture of red and black that had some stripes. All of the red fur is now gray and the black is still black. His face is snow white and his eyes and nose are coal black. He really is a cutie and has an adorable personality.
I really need to get som new pictures of the fur-kids.
Conrad and Finnious are going to be 10(!) in January. I can't believe that.
Even after a neck surgery and two back surgeries (one last year), Finnious still acts like a spring chicken. And looks pretty young, too!
Conrad, on the other hand, started looking and acting like and oldman after his third back surgery. He's still my sweet baby boy, but he is such an oldman.

Conrad - you are one handsome man (not oldman :) ) I could smooch your gorgeous white face all the day long ! I love all our seniors here - so distinguished - I LOVE their precious faces :comfort:
Conrad, that's a great impersonation of that other Texan, Mr. Lovett, in the movie where he was chasing Christina Ricci across the southwest. You should send it to your Auntie Amy...
And do you know how Owen the Samoan is doing?
Owen's great! He's starting to get a bit white in the nose, too :)

O.K. Cliffy, honey, let's analyze the options here:
A) getting older;
B) getting dead.
I'd go for Option A personally!
Auntie Karen :chairfall:
My Bonita will be 15 this November 27th. She likes to sleep and eat. She no longer can do steps and gets carried outside. She is quite gray. Oscar is now 12 (will be 13 this coming March). And Trooper, is probably around 9.

Well we have a foster Ginger or as we like to call her Granny. The vet thinks she's 10 or so, she's in excellent health and has great teeth. She does have a touch of arthritis but that don't stop her when you call her for dinner. She was dumped in an Arkansas shelter. We think her human died or went into the nursing home. http://drna.org/06616 She's looking for a retirement home
Then we have Handsome Taylor in foster care, he's 10 plus as well. http://drna.org/06619
