Title: Any suggestions for a dental rinse that works on tartar?
Post by: Madderoos Mom on September 27, 2009, 10:20:26 PM
Miss Maddie is heading for the vet on Wednesday for her 2nd teeth cleaning in a year.  Seems she really knows how to manufacture the yucky tartar and plaque.  I have to admit, I have not been diligent in the tooth brushing dept but hope to do better.  I have been reading about some rinses out there that if put in their water, they break down the crud before it crudifies.  Any thoughts?  Please send some wee rays to my Roo on Wednesday.  The little senile dear needs all the good thoughts she can get.

I have been using CET could not find it last time I went to buy some so now trying a product made by Four Paws jury still out on it I think the CET helps.

Sorry for the late response, Sandi, I'm just now seeing this. The last 2 times we got Gretchen's teeth done, we used Oravet. It's a gel that you put on the teeth once/week. The initial dose has to go on right after the cleaning by the tech doing the cleaning. Then once/week. The theory, as I understand it, is that the plaque forms on the gel instead of the tooth, and is sloughed off as the gel comes off. The following week there's a whole new coat of gel for the plaque to form on. The carton has 8 treatments in it and is kinda pricey (I don't remember the price) but each treatment container can be used about 4 times on a doxie's little mouth. We use Q-tips so we don't contaminate the container. Having said that, we have not been good at doing this every week. It does work, though, because Gretchie is 10 years old and has not lost a tooth yet. Her breath doesn't stink either. We were very good at doing it every week until we lost Ilsa. Soon after that, we got Elli and poor Gretchie's mouth wasn't thought of. Now that she has plaque on her teeth, it's useless putting the gel on. I plan to start it again the next time she gets her teeth cleaned. Ugh! I wish they didn't have to go under general anesthesia for that!
