Buddy & Patches going nuts out by the back Cement wall for the last two days Buddy running around with his hair standing up.Patches usually barks in the garage when Buddy is out barking just she figures he is bigger than she is let him run into what ever is out there 1st. When I went to go let them in smelled skunk in the back yard I had taken the flashlight and looked all over the back yard earlier.Turns out the skunk must have been in the Cement yard behind our house the dogs did not smell at all after I got them in the garage with the back door closed I sure did not want to have to wash dogs at night. Did not want to take any chances when Buddy woke me up this morning I walked the backyard first before turning them loose. Usually skunks carry Rabies sure do not want to deal with that for myself or Buddy & Patches.
Then my hubby asks me if I knew what a skunk smelled like I wanted to deck him. I said of course I know what a skunk smelled like I told him to go in the back yard & take a sniff he declined. Then I had e-mailed my neighbor across the street about the skunk she asks me was I sure it wasn't a fox them also had a bad smell??? Use to have a fox that would sun himself up on top of the plates of bricks back there they make Bricks, cement blocks& drainage type pipes that are made out of cement. That place is two city block long and a city block wide they have all kinds of wild critters back there.Bats, Owls, Hawks,Possums, Fox& Feral cats not much telling what else is over there also Coyotes I was told were back there. Always scared about something getting Patches Hope Buddy will not allow that.?Dobermans are usually pretty territory hope he is too.
Patches Mom
That is pretty scary about all those critters being around there....Please be careful Patches and Buddy....we don't want any of our other puppers to get sprayed....we have had enough of that already!!!
Fox does smell similar to skunk. Years ago, I knew a hunter that used to use Fox Lure. I can't recall what part of the fox the "lure" was supposed to smell like (excrement, anal glands, pherenomes), but I do know that it stank to high heaven. One would think that a dog would not be attracted to a skunk's smell, but would likely be attracted to fox.
Foxes, unless they are rabid, will seldom take a stand against dogs, even small ones like dachshunds. I remember being in the woods with Rudy-angel and Max-angel when I spotted a fox about 15 feet ahead. The fox clearly saw Rudy, who was in the lead. Rudy had not spotted the fox, but knew something was out there as his snout was pointed up and really sniffing the air. Unable to get a "lock" on the scent, Rudy fluttered his ears and moved on to the next thing that interested him. When Rudy's ears fluttered, it was enough to get the fox to turn tail and head back to its den.
If the fox has rabies, all bets are off. They are far too unpredictable when rabid.
