Title: Winston's Chiropractor Appt Went Extremely Well
Post by: cheryl186 on August 31, 2009, 07:01:14 PM
Winston did amazingly well today!!  He was very good on the 45 minute ride to Oldenburg.  We had to wait a little bit for Dr. Haverkos to get there but it did not take long once he arrived.  We placed Winston on the table and this amazing man went right to work massaging, pressing pressure points, talkng and soothing our little boy so that you could see the tension in his muscles melting away.  He adjusted his back from his neck all the way down to his tail.  Winston stood still as if he knew this man was trying to help him.  When the doctor adjusted his neck he let out a little yelp as well as when he hit "THE SPOT" at T12 = T13 but not too bad.  When the doctor adjusted his hips he told us that Winston would be sore there (it's just like us if we have a problem and overcompensate for it with another body part and knock everything out of whack)....and Winston let out a little yell on each hip but then everything was just fine....The next step was Acupuncture.  He placed 7 or so needles in carefully chosen places and twisted them in a certain order.  He then syringed some type of pink medication into each needle before pulling them out.  Winston didn't feel a thing!!!  Then he massaged his body all over and was finished.  We placed Winston down on the floor and the doctor watched him walk around....we noticed little bounce in his step that wasn't there before....he also did not seem to have his body hunched as much as before the treatment.  The doctor gave us a muscle relaxer and anti-inflammatory (holistic medications) which we started Winston on tonight.  On the way home Winston almost fell asleep.  Once home he ate and is now currently sleeping on daddy's lap in his recliner.  He hasn't been able to sleep like this in weeks....usually he would lay on daddy and keep his eyes open and you could tell he did not feel well.  We have to continued with the Tramadol and Dexamethasone until finished and then continue with tonight's medication until finished.  We go back to Dr. Haverkos on 9/28 for another treatment.  This is going to be a process but the doctor was very pleased with the visit today and Winston's results and assured us that he has had a lot of success with dachshunds.  Winston may be a little sore from the adjustment tomorrow and we have to closely monitor his activities for the next three days.  We will crate as much as possible and continue with the crate long after that.  Now, I can't wait to take Winston back for his next treatment!!!!  I was so afraid and worried about today, but so far it has turned out to be a very good day for all of us :thumb:  and a wonderful experience that I would recommend to everyone.  Dr. Haverkos also said that I might want to think about bringing Zoe in this Fall for an adjustment since it has been 3 years since her surgery.  As a preventative measure.  I am so proud of my baby boy today

I'm so glad that Winston was so brave!!!   Sounds like that guy is great.    Porky's Hollistic vet tried acupuncture on him, but he freaked as soon as he saw the needles.   We decided to let that go fo now, and we'll try it on a day when he's more comfortable with the idea.  I sure hope this helps Winston get feeling better and back to his old self.  Its the worst to see our babies in pain!

That's great news.
Do you crate him in the car as a lot of damage can be done trying to stay in one place, we take Amy every where in a soft crate, not that she is happy about that.
But great news now to stop him acting like an idiot as they seem to do when feeling better

Hello all.  Winston seemed to be pretty uncomfortable last night but as the Chiropractor said; was and would probably be sore the next day from the chiropractic adjustment.  I did however notice this morning that when he peed outside he lifted his leg LIKE A BOY!!!!  YEA!!!!  And hubby just gave me an update when he let them out at lunch today that he did it again!!  As far as riding in the car, I always just have one or the other with me and they lay on my lap on a blankie.  I hope that is okay, but a soft crate for both of them would be worth looking into....Thank you!

Thank you.  We feel that we are moving in the right direction.   :xfinger:   Winston was a little uncomfortable last night (moreso than usual).  Night is the worst time.  Today at lunch he trotted a little bit to the food bowl and pottied outside both like a boy and like a girl, but that is okay.  Gary said he acted pretty good.  I talked to the doctor's office and they said he would have good days and bad days.  Today I ordered Joint Rescue from the Only Natural Pet website.  It has glucosamine, chondroitin in it and many other botanical extracts to help with inflammation and pain.  I have to leave work now but I will post more about this later.  Everyone have a very nice Holiday week-end!

Dr. Haverkos said that this will be a "work in progress" and it will take some time and several appts.  We go back 9/21/09 at 5:30pm for his next acupuncture and adjustment.  He is off his regular pain medication now and is quite uncomfortable as the doctor said he would be.  He stated if I felt Winston needed more Tramadol that I could call my regular vet and obtain it, which I did so this morning.  They also are giving me a few more doses of dexamethasone to help the next couple of days.  I have ordered Joint Rescue from the Only Natural Pet website to help with inflammation and pain which has glucosamine and chondroitin in it.  I must go now but will write more later.
