Title: Lots of questions.....
Post by: doxielady5569128 on July 31, 2009, 10:36:58 AM
Okay.  First off I'll tell you this, Our bet suggested we get the casules since the liquid form is hard to find around here.    He said to give Porky 500mgs a day, or half a capsule.   We found two liquid fish oils here locally.   My questions are this?   How much of the liquid kind should Porky get?  He is 9 pounds.     Also what is the best brand.  Is it okay to buy one that has flavor added as well as DHA and PHP???  I'm totally lost.  Thanks for any help you can give.  I want to get Porky started immediately so we are going shopping tonight.

Also....what shampoo can I get that would be VERY mild for Porky?   I need one I can find pretty easily too.  I know, I'm picky.  Sorry!!!    Porky has to have a bath once a week now, so I don't want something that will really dry out his skin.

Also, have you heard of giving garlic supplements to your dog?  If so, what's it for and how much do you give????

Sorry, I think I'm done with the barrage of questions now.  I just want my baby boy healthy again.

P.S.  We do have a GNC, Nutter's, Walmart, Target, Murdoch's, and KMART in case that helps!   Thanks in advance four your help!!!

Go easy on the supplements. Some are made with stuff that may enhance the allergies (wheat, corn, eggs, who knows etc). Don't introduce too many at once. Get him on a good nutricious dog food that he can tolerate and stick with it. No treats!!!  I purchased my dog food from the vet. It came in two forms - dry, and canned. The canned food I used to shape in cookies and bake for him as treats. After awhile I gave him carrots, and blueberries for treats. Always had a bowl in the fridge. The vet also prescribed a medicated prescription shampoo that helped with the skin. When his skin was unbearable, he would drag his towel to me to show me he wanted a bath. I also never permitted the excessive licking, although sometimes he would sneak a slurp.
The medication may also compromise his immune system. So be very careful around other dogs that you are not sure of. If you see him sniffing ears....that's a good sign the other dog may have an ear infection. Monitor very carefully.

I'm in Oz so we don't have the same things on the shelf as you lot accross the pond, but check out the amount of each in te capsule as that is what is important not how may mls.
Shampoo, Emma was our allergy girl and I used to use mine on her Neutragena TGel or coal tar soap, as I have psorisis, and it worked well on her. The other is to use a bar of what we call washing soap as it is pure soap no additives, thats what a lot of the breeders use over here.

I use Bio-Groom Natural Oatmeal Anti Itch Shampoo on Finnegan. I just got it from the All Natural Pet Store and its AWESOME. It doesnt foam becaue there isn't soap in it so its very mild and nice. Fin loves it.

VERY good stuff.

Patches still weighs 14.3# every other day I throw a Fish oil capsule in her food bowl she just eat it right down. Doberman talks says if giving Fish oil capsules also give vitamin  E.I get mine at Walmart  use to get Salmon oil  can not find it now. If you can afford it there is Grizzly oil in a pump bottle might not be too pricey since you have one dog that is little. Do NOT get contact eye solution it has other ingredients in it besides saline. You can make you own all it is water boiled with salt in it put in a sterile bottle. You might google how to make your own saline for the water amount and salt amount how long to boil it. Too much garlic can be toxic yeah they put it in dog cookies, used it for fleas, some say it is toxic some say it is not????.Still think the honey might help. I use Pro Pet 4-1  Oatmeal shampoo for dogs at Walmart best shampoo I have ever used has moisturizers something like a built in cream rinse cost about $4.00 for 20oz,down side suppose to  smell like vanilla. Also you might try google any recipe for Oatmeal shampoo for dogs???? I ran across one but can't remember where.Does the allergies make Porky have breathing problems if so I would ask the vet for a EPPI Pen it might save his life they might make a baby one since Porky is little I'm sure they go by weight.

We did some research on the garlic as a supplement and I'm going to pass on giving Porky that one.    We are checking labels on the different kinds of fish oil very carefully.  I haven't found one that I liked yet at any of the stores here, so I'm going to order some online I think.    I did find a shampoo at a local farm store that should work really well for Porky's itchy skin.    It is a totally natural shampoo so it should work well.  Also, I'm going to get some from a groomer's supply store that I know of.    We don't plan on using saline, Porky's eyes have gotten cleared up really nicely.   We also have to order some of the stuff you add to their water that cleans their teeth.

Porky is feeling much better, but is still pretty itchy.  I can't wait for him to be off the prednisone!!   I hate that stuff.    We are adjusting to his new schdule pretty well, but we are all tired.    Once Porky is done with the eye ointment we'll be able to get enough sleep again.    :hello2:  Thanks for all your ideas and advice!!!
