Title: Eyes
Post by: Dee Dee and Hallie on July 27, 2009, 11:00:20 AM
I've been bugging the poor eye clinic every couple of days to see where we are on the cancellation list (otherwise they are squeezing us in at urgent care hours Aug 7 Hallie's birthday). They called this morning at 9 and had a cancellation at 10 (we live 40 min from there). So I was racing around getting her ready to go when the Dr called and said she had an emergency eye surgery at 10 but would squeeze us in at 4 today. I'm freaking out a little worried what she will find but glad to not have to take her on her birthday. Anyway I will ask about the cataracts and if there is anything we can do for them and let you know, did anyone have any other eye questions I should ask her?

That means we had to cancel her allergy shot today and she'll get that tomorrow then I have my surgery thing Wednesday, when did we turn into geriatrics??

We'll be hoping that Hallie gets a clean bill of eye health!  And yes, the birthday should be for celebrating, not doctoring!  Also, we'll be sending rays for you on Wednesday..:)

Deb I'll let you know what she says about cataracts. They called me back and said the surgery is taking longer than they planned and were having to cancel already scheduled people today too. So they were going to fit her in on Wednesday...but of course that is the only day I can't go. So she talked to the doc and called again and said some other clients were willing to reschedule and if we came in at 4 we may have to wait but they'd fit us in. SHEESH. It's good this happened though because they wouldn't be willing to fit me in if they didn't feel guilty about having to cancel my 10 oclock. I just really appreciate them getting us in.

LOL Auntie Karen I'll trade ya! Six weeks in Europe sounds sooo awesome! How about I start packing and you take Hallie to her eye appointment today, dentist in the morning, Hallie's allergy shot in the afternoon, then just a lil surgery on Wednesday...up until January 2008 I was NEVER sick...ever! Now it's like sorry lady you're OLD LOL! You are going to have an awesome time take pictures for us!!

We just got back, this vet is so wonderful with the dogs she talks really gently to her and after every eye exam (she did several) she praises her and says that deserves a cookie and gives her a little one. She checked everything and said of all the things unequal pupils can be, this is the best (THANK GOODNESS) it's called iris atrophy it sounds like what David's Max probably had. The iris where it touches all around the pupil, atrophies which makes the pupil appear larger. She said it's in both eyes but worse in the left. It will probably keep progressing but the main problem with it is sensitivity to light so I am supposed to get her a pair of these
http://www.doggles.com/
:headbang:

She only has to wear them in bright sunlight, also maybe a visor.

She did sight tests too like dropping cotton balls different directions etc to see if she could track them with both eyes and she did fine so her sight isn't compromised much if at all at this point.

She also has inherited cataracts started, which she said concerns her more than the iris atrophy (but still doesn't concern her a lot). I knew she had cataracts started but didn't know they were inherited, she said they are not the old dog kind. I asked what can be done for cataracts and she said nothing, she said some people do try supplements and things but she really didn't feel they did anything. She did say people in sunnier climates have a lot more cataracts so apparently bright sun isn't good for them so one more reason to protect her eyes while outside. She said the cataracts may or may not change but from the photos I gave her of Hallie's eyes over the years, she could see the cataracts in a few of them and she said if they are changing it's not very fast so we'll just recheck her in 6 months. They can remove cataracts and put in a false lens if things get too bad on dogs.

So that was great news to hear, better if her eyes were perfect but given the situation it was the best we could hope for. I'm just glad it's something that won't cause her pain or blindness (the cataracts can but hopefully they won't). She said everything else in her eyes looked great, retina, vessels, etc.

Deb we of course don't know for sure if the girls are blood related but if they are I wonder if Sophie's are inherited cataracts too.

Dee Dee and Deb could get  Sophie and Haillie DNA's. If they have the same parents most of it should align.
Good news, we took Emma when she was about 10 or so and she had some form of cataract, but they said she had another problem which would mean if we had them removed she would still end up blind within 6 months of the op, so we decided to just let her be.
As for the goggles don't laugh, I've ordered a pair for Oliver as since he is now a "country boy" he loves having his mother drive at 30-40 Kilometers an hour so he can stick his head out the window.
Now we await the results fo your Drs/Vet visit.

I'm glad you got good news about the pupils.  We were praying it would nothing major.   It stinks about the cataracts, but our Brittney Spaniel that had them had many years before she needed surgery.   Hopefully Hallie's will progress really slowly.         We can't wait to see some piccies ofher rockin' dose doggles!

Great news on Hallie's unequal pupils....Sounds like you found a really great Doggie Opthomologist!  :apls:  I can't wait to see pictures of Hallie in her doggles either    As for the cataracts, hopefully they will progress very very slowly and hopefully Hallie will never need surgery for them.  As far as the cataracts being inherited, I was wondering about Winston.  Zoe and he have the same father but different mothers.  Zoe displays no evidence of cataracts while Winston has the "Junior Cataract" in his left eye.....so I guess Winston has inherited that from his mother's side :dontknow: :thinik:  Maybe I should get a pair of doggles for Winston :thumb:

That would be interesting Roberta! I never thought of a DNA test...hmmmm!
Yeay for Oliver, did you get him doggles or are there other kinds? Would love to see a picture of him wearing them. Your 2 are lucky pups with a very good momma! (psst don't tell but I also let Hallie sit on my lap if we are driving thru town slowly...she loves sticking her head out the window and sniffing away and barking when we pass a doglet.)

That's good to know about your Brittany Amorette. The vet did say they don't all progress so I am hoping for that scenario. At least we'll be monitoring it regularly and keep tabs on what it is doing. I'm so glad the iris atrophy wasn't one of the other possibilities. We'll get some Hallie Doggle piccies as soon as they come I also ordered her some doggie sun screen because she does like to bake herself in the sun at times.

This vet is awesome Cheryl Hallie is always a good and cooperative patient but she was not happy, and Dr.Coolie had her relaxed and ears up in no time.  I had taken my Jessie to her before, I told her yesterday that the last time I saw her she was pregnant and she said her daughter just turned 15. Wow. I really feel old! Hmmm I wonder if Winston does have inherited cataracts. The vet was super busy and very nice to squeeze me in so I didn't ask all the questions I wanted, I was curious how she knew they were inherited and not regular old dog ones. I don't know if they two types behave differently either. Hallie thinks Winston should get some doggles they have some with flames and a skull and cool colors! Different colored interchangeable lenses too. ROCK.

Yes klsb, Hallie is anxious to get her glasses, she isn't sure what to wear with them first her cowboy hat from Ron and Delia or her tiara from Barb!  :thumb:

LOL LOL!!!
Too funny.
You better watch it auntie Karen, ALL the doxies on the board are going to want iris atrophy!  :thumb: The doggles look tame now compared to these models. Hallie just has to have the pink flamingos....and the next one...and the one after that a pair for every day of the week!

"Sugar Mama" indeed!
