Title: Does anyone know what this is?
Post by: Dee Dee and Hallie on July 15, 2009, 01:59:28 PM
I just found it in the front yard, Hallie walked right by it and of course I am worried it is rat poison or something. Anyone recognize it?

Well, it looks like a cellulose wall protector on a child gate I had, but it is a bit bigger.  What does it seem to be made of?

WOW interesting.  Looks like something you would give a rabbit or small rodent like that to eat know what I mean.  Not sure but I would make sure Hallie doesn't get it just in case it is posion.  Hope you find out and if/when you do let us know please.  Thanks for sharing
hugs and love laura and romeo

weird but unlikely to be any of the newer rat posions. I understand they are dyed a blue green or green blue color.  The color is so intense if the rat actually lives long enough to digest it, then the rat poop is green blue.

Ask yer neighbors.  Maybe a kid tossed a cookie over the fence for Hallie?  Some kinda bird seed cake for a special feeder?

Weird, though.  If she walked by it it must not have a very tempting odor.  Does it have a smell?

We just worked our way across town and hit 4 feed/pet stores, 2 vets and the county extension agent. No one knows what it is. The guesses have been similar to what you guys have said, a small animal mineral block, something to do with plants, rat poison, mesquito ring, etc. But no one recognizes it for sure. One girl actually licked it! She said it wasn't salty and didn't have a taste (it also has no smell). It looks like little flakes of something in it, but of what I don't know. I told her I'd be back and if she wasn't there I was taking my dog to the vet as a precaution. The rat poison I've seen at the stores here are round with a hole but longer and star shaped and as Les said bright yellow. I tried to find someone who can test it but no luck there either. So now I will send this picture over the net to plant, bird, and small animal people to see if anyone there recognizes it. Not what I had planned to be doing today but my nerves and stomach need an answer.

Yes though I am 99% sure Hallie didn't see it before I did and it's been a couple hours and she's fine.

:thumb:You can test it on a rabbit.  It looks like a mineral ring they sell - they also sell a round white salt ring for them to chew on.  Check with a House Rabbit Society near you to see if they know about it.  Lots of pet stores are "Rabbit Ignorant". :thinik:

If a rabbit won't eat it, I'd throw it away.  They seem to have some kind of internal ability for sniffing out non-edible plant stuff. :icon_albino:

And Hallie's FINE - CALM DOWN!  She's not like that poor Russian that got poisoned and took six months to die!  If she was going to get sick, she'd already BE sick!!

I just found our local chapter of House Rabbit Society and emailed them. Thanks. I am sure Hallie is ok my main worry is if there is more where that came from and whatever brought it into our yard might bring another I would like to know it's not something dangerous so I don't have to go out and "check the meadow for Bambi" every time I let her outside. :) Saw some cute bunnies at the feed stores today on our quest, Hallie got to cuddle with some in a pen and she also got to sniff noses with a store cat...plus every place we stopped gave her a treat so it was a good day to be Hallie.

Then my vote is some kinda compressed wood/particle chip thingee from an old sofa or other upolstered furninture--a piece that would normally be covered in fabric.  Could it be some kinda craft material?  The nighbor's kids might know.  Srlsy girl, don't go searching blade by blade through yer lawn--a critter picked it up, decided it wasn't edible and dropped it there.

ANd how are YOU, anyway??

crap!  I know what it is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  it's one of those fire starter thingees. Set a match to it and see if it doesn't start burning right away!  Wood particle impregnated with parrafin would have no smell.

DeeDee, I had Dave look at the picture and he believes it to be segments of rocket motor fuel used in big model rockets that are set off....he says not the itty bitty ones that he and the boys use to shoot off but the BIG ones.  Says that it is flammable.  When placed in the rockets, if burns from the inside out from the hole.  The surface area remains constant with the heat.    Dee

What a great thought Les. I just tried to light it on fire but it didn't take so does that rule out duraflame log? How big around are they too this is an inch and a half across?

Oh my gosh Dee...I wonder if that could be it. Please tell me I didn't just spend my day taking a piece of fireworks all over town to the vets and courthouse. That would make sense though there were pieces of fireworks all over the neighborhood. I didn't even consider it being something non edible. The material it's made of is crumbly...and it does look like tiny pieces of wood slivers and chips in there along with something that sort of looks like cornmeal. Does that still sound like it to Dave?

I just got a response from the rabbit organization...

I've no idea. But nice manicure!

Okay....Dave can't believe that you held a match to it!  The more you describe it, the more it sounds as though it is some sort of rocket motor propellant.  If you break it up into little pieces and place on a flat stone or plate, take a rolled up newspaper or something but don't put your fingers right up to it, and light it, it should burn.  If it doesn't burn, then most likely it has gotten wet and will not ignite.  I would venture to say that if there were fireworks all over the neighborhood, it most likely is that.  Also, if there was a fireworks show somewhere, it could also be from that.  Dave said that for the big ones, they stack them and this could have been one that didn't ignite all of the wafers and it fell from the sky......and it landed in your yard.   So, I won't tell you that you didn't spend your day going all over town with your newest found treasure.   Don't worry anymore.......

DeeDee, see my previous post.....but as an addition, Dave just went on the web and from what he found, what you found, is a rocket motor segment for fireworks.  The description fit and from the picture it matches.....a piece of leftover fireworks!

Dave is smarter than 2 vets, 14 feed store employees and a county extension agent! I can't believe he figured it out. What a relief. I have to say I am ROTFLMAO both at thinking what I put that thing through today (vet clinics...a lady licking it!) and Les telling me to set it on fire. LOL!!!!! (no worries Les I didn't come close to getting hurt I am not that good with a match! :angel4:) At least I had the dawg inside the house when I was trying to light it!  I can just see the headlines now...

Way to go Dave in solving the mystery!

I think the girl that licked it was the funniest part of the story (at least we can laugh about it now).   I'd never have done that in a million years.
