Heartless people we're recognized in many forms, just hope that little dog will not end giving her up.

It will be 12 years ago this September that I got my Max.  I was ignorant about breeders and rescue and my ex-husband found him at a backyard breeder and he has been a great dog.  Lily was also from a breeder, but someone that I knew.  This was almost 9 years ago.  Gabbe and Minna were both rescues.  I started working with a rescue group 8 yrs ago and that is how I got Gabbe.  Anyway, what I am trying to say is that it is a matter of education.  I didn't know anything about rescue groups when I got my first two. My recommendation to you is to educate your co-worker about rescue and then when they decide they need another doxie (can anyone have just one?) then they can be educated and go the rescue route like I did.

agree with you with one caveat:

My two boys, Merlin and Beau, are like Sharpies - they're permanent markers.  Being spayed so late in life makes retraining almost impossible.

Now I love them and I am committed to them, but they have ruined enough furniture and other things in my house.  Even restricting them to my bedroom means at least once a week someone marks my pillow, my quilt, my bookcases, my walls - you get the picture.

That's why I switched to females when Roscoe passed away, and got Miss Ima.

The ones who really need to be educated are breeders...there are a lot of good ones out there trying to make the breed healthier but so many just breed for money, to see what they get, to give the kids an experience, thinking it will make their dogs temperament better, etc. They aren't researching the lines to check for inherited health problems (most importantly back issues) or even temperament problems. It just makes me crazy to think we power to greatly reduce many of the health problems our breed gets with selective breeding but it won't happen with people just breeding like crazy out there, and of course not to mention glutting the market with dachshunds that end up in rescue adding to an already enormous problem. I would never breed but so many people have said to me it's a shame Hallie is spayed she would have had nice puppies, she does have the most wonderful temperament and I think she's as cute as a bug but she's had some health issues I would not want passed on to other doxies (not to mention putting her through the pain and risk of pregnancy and whelping!). I wish there was a solution like you have to pass a test of some kind before you can breed or something to make people more accountable before they do but I doubt that will ever happen.

I have to go hug my dog now! :)

That is extremely frustrating.  I know how you feel, Ed.  There are so many dachshunds in rescue who are every bit as beautiful, loyal, and lovable as a purchased puppy.  I wish people thought of rescue first.  If they simply searched online, they would find multiple dachshund rescues with dogs of all sizes and colors.  Really, you can find a rescue dachshund to fit any family.  I think the word on rescue is out there.  I don't know why people choose to ignore it.

Just to clarifiy, I have never bred my doxies.  I had them neutered and spayed before any of them turned 6 months old.  I agree with what Dee said about responsible breeders.  And like Hallie, my Lily is a sweetheart and would have made very cute puppies, but she does have back issues that I would never want passed on to puppies.  I will always advocate rescue to any one.  I will probably never get another doxie thru any other means.

Part of the reason i went to a breeder for Finnegan was that i wanted to make sure i was getting a healthy puppy and one i would have for as long as possible. I wanted Finnegan (not him specifically, but my first daschund in general) to be a balanced happy dog so i could use his behaviours as a reference point. I felt that i didn't know enough about Doxies to rescue and rehabilitate one. Now that i have Fin though, and have learned much more about the breed, i plan on being blessed with more and they will be rescues!
