This morning when I got up at 6:30 and looked out my kitchen window I saw a black & white dog on our west side patio. I tapped on the window and the dog looked up at me....I made a motion for it to go away, but it just stood there staring at me. I went outside to shoo it away, but it just walked around the house. I finally did get it out to the gate, and it walked down the street.....I saw it turn into someone's driveway.
I went in the house and went about getting ready for my day....which was to set up for a yard sale we are having in Thursday & Friday. When Dad got up, I told him about the dog.
After breakfast we went outside.....and there was the dog again! I walked slowly up to her and put out my hand.....then I noticed a collar with some tags. I checked the tags, one showed a rabies shot, and the others had a phone number up in Washington, but no local identification. One had the name BLUE on it.
The dog walked very slowly and looked tired....and kinda old. We put out a dish of water but it was ignored. Our neighbor came over and she said she would call the local Humane Society....they in turn called the phone number in Washington which turned out to be the Humane Society up there. Washington then called the Yuma office identifying the owners of the dog. In the meantime, the owners went over to the local Humane Society to report a lost dog.....at that very moment they were able to tell them that they thought the dog had been located! Within a half-hour they were at our house....
While this was going on, Dad had given the dog a couple slices of sausage, and she had drunk some of the water....then she laid down on a tarp that was on the patio and went to sleep. We think the dog slept for two or three hours!
When the owners came and went over to the dog, they had to wake her up...at first the dog didn't pay too much attention, but the man called her by name a little louder.....BLUE! The dog lifted its head and then got right up, tail wagging, and going from one to the other owner! ....even came over to me, Dad, and Evelyn.....it was so neat to see this reunion. After a few moments, the man said, "Ready to go home?" and the tail wagged and the dog walked around in circles....then let out a few barks as if to say, "Let's go!" It was quite an adventure for all of us.
The people had just moved down to Yuma four days ago.... they live about a mile south of us.....last evening they let Blue out, and when they went to call her in, she was nowhere to be found....they said they went out and searched the neighborhood....then decided to go to the Humane Society in the morning.
That poor dog had wandered around a wide area, in the dark, trying to find her way back home....of course, she wasn't familiar with the area! No wonder she was so tired when she stopped at our house! And, not only the fact that she wandered around all night.......she is almost 15 years old!!
She is an Australian shepherd/border collie mix.....one eye is blue and the other one is brown!! The blue eye was also very white, so we thought she was blind in that eye!
This event made all of us feel pretty good! I know the owners were very appreciative of our efforts to locate them, and to have taken care of the dog.
(Hope you enjoyed this story.)
