Title: Scooter at the Dentist
Post by: scootersmom on June 08, 2009, 08:36:21 AM
So I just dropped Scooter off at the Vet Dentist office and now I'm at work...worried sick about my little guy.   They are going to put him under, clean his teeth, do radiography, some injections, and hopefully (please oh please oh PLEASE) they won't have to pull any teeth, but no guarantees.  (except that it's going to cost around $660) (*cries*)

They will call later with news.  Until then, any rays/prayers/good thoughts for Scooter and his poor beleagured snoot would be deeply appreciated.  Thanks so much.

EDIT 10:05 am: They've already found one bad tooth, bottom jaw.  They're going to pull it, and do another bone graft, and maybe do one on the other side too.  Several hundred dollars more, the vet said, and more pain and stitches for poor Scooter.

Yep, it's new.  Today was just supposed to be a 3-month checkup, maybe a dental cleaning - a bargain at $600+!  Unfortunately, he found more "pockets" or something, and then the grafts, and the question of how long Scooter had been sneezing (he hasn't been sneezing terribly, and how could his nose get infections when he doesn't even have any upper teeth left?), and etc etc and now my hopes of getting out of there for less than $1200 are crushed.  And he wants to do it all again in another three months.  Which...I can't.  I just can't.  It's going to take me another 6 months to pay this off now.  Sorry Scooter, MOMMY FAILED YOU.

I just don't understand.  I brush his teeth every day.  I scrape them and rinse them and use the Petzlife and I do everything I am told, and no matter how hard I fight my poor dog still has to go through this every 3-6 months for the rest of his life?  How am I supposed to do that to him?  I feel like nothing I do is doing any good.  AUGH.

And the thought of bringing him home tonight, and having him be miserable and in pain all night and all day tomorrow, bleeding from his little face again...it just makes me want to cry.  Which would be okay, except I am at WORK and I need to keep it together.

Sorry I am complaining so much.  I know intellectually things will work out, one way or another.  It just *feels* so terrible right now.

Your NOT a bad mommy nor have you failed Scooter. The fact that you do this AT ALL even ONCE makes you a better owner then half the world around.

Scooter is very lucky to have you, and he knows that. He must just genetically have bad teeth. This is NOT your fault! As long as your their to give him kisses and snuggle him while his owies go away he will forget it in no time.

Do not feel bad for ANYTHING! Its so heartwarming to see someone that actually cares about their pet nowadays.. Lately (at least on Vancouver Island) there have been such terrible stories in the news about people not even feeding their pets let alone flossing their teeth!

You are an inspiration and people should look up to you and take from your example how our pets SHOULD be treated!

That is just terrible poor both of you! I just don't understand either why some pups have bad luck with their teeth...just imagine if you didn't have him and no one paid any attention what his teeth would be like. You really are doing everything you can sometimes crud just happens yanno..... Scooter WILL get better again, your pocketbook may take longer to recover than he will! Ouch!!!!! Hang in there Noel you are such a great mom.

Maybe poor Scooter is just cursed with bad teeth like some people are.  You are doing more than potentially any dog owner I know to keep his teeth healthy.  Scooter is very, very lucky to have a mom like you who is willing and able to give him the dental care that he needs.  Good luck with his recovery!

Noel, you are nowhere near being a bad mom! It's just genetics on Scoot-man's part. Just think the pain he'd be in if you hadn't done what you've done already. At least this pain is just temporary. I know it's hard, though. It's never easy to see them in pain. Hang in there, girl. I'll be praying for both of you. Sounds like he'll be getting scrambled eggies!

You are definately not a bad mom to scooter!! If you were, you wouldn't be beating yourself up over this.  In fact, you wouldn't eve care at all and would use that money on yourself instead of providing him the care he needs.       You are doing a GREAT job!!!    :comfort:  We had a Cocker/Border Collie mix with genetically bad teeth.  No matter what we did, she lost all of her teeth, by age 5.    The vet assured us over and over that it wasn't our fault.    I know its hard to watch your baby in so much pain, but you are doing what's best for him.   He loves you and I'm sure grateful he has someone as great as you to care for him!

Title: Re: Scooter at the Dentist (UPDATE)

Good morning - er, afternoon, all!  First of all, thank you so very much for patiently listening to me and reassuring me while I was having an epic meltdown yesterday.  It really did a world of good to hear that I was not, indeed, failing to take good care of Scooter.  I'm a very lucky person to have friends here who are so understanding and encouraging!

Now, as for how Scooter is doing?  He is GREAT.  Shockingly so.  And SO much better than last time.  No bleeding or crying or scary lack of appetite...he was a little tired last night, and very grumpy (he growled at me whenever I touched him, and insisted on sleeping on the other couch with his uncle - my roommate - instead of near me).  But other than that, you'd never know he'd just had any sort of procedure done, nonetheless one involving stitches and needles and grafts and stolen teeth and being knocked out.  And today he seems 100% normal.  Hooray!  I'm fully stocked with eggs to scramble and vienna sausages for treats, and his normal canned food is being eaten with all the enthusiasm he always displays.  I'm not making him use the Brake Fast bowl until his mouth heals, though.  I don't want him knocking his wounds against the bowl bumps.  For now, he's eating off mommy's "good china".

Again, thank you all - I really cannot express adequately what your support and prayers and rays have meant to me over the last day.  *hugs*

That is great news!  You probably stressed about the whole thing more than Scooter did.  Now he gets special food and extra cuddling!
