So Finnegan learned how to sit pretty fast when i first decided to start training, but i didn't think anything of it.. But last night i decided to START training him on the "Down" command, thinking it might take a while... Well he had it down in fifteen minutes and remembers it just fine today!
Is this normal? Has anyone else noticed that Dashies learn super fast?
Or was i right all along in thinking that he is the sweetest, handsomest AND smartest dog in the world? :apls:
Some dachshies do learn quick, especially when they are young. The stubborn streak usually doesn't start kicking in until they are "teenagers", usually around 1 1/2 years old. Then, of course, there are puppers like Dee Dee's Hallie that make the rest of our puppers look downright silly. My pair are reasonably obedient. Their major plus is that their housebreaking habits are impeccable. Zora, in particular is near perfect. The only accident she had was when she had a UTI.

I feel compelled to mention that we are not "dachshies" or "dashies" or "doxies" or "wieners/weeners/weiners/whiners". In this country we are referred to as dachshunds, which is German for "badger hound." In our native land we are called "teckels."
Heck, you can call me anything, just don't call me late for supper!
And as for training, may I quote: "I would rather train a striped zebra to balance an Indian club than induce a dachshund to heed my slightest command." - E.B. White. My colleague Merlin's rude interjection was a perfect case in point!!

They learn super quick and then they TRAIN you!!!!!!!!!! :2funny:
My pup learned sit really fast. The secret is to keep repeating the commands over and over and over and over and over. And if you're smart, withold any treats UNTIL they work for it. If you learn their trust --and that includes serious boundaries--they will be obdient. mostly. :grin:
