Title: Neuter Nerves..
Post by: klsb on May 18, 2009, 10:10:15 AM
Finnegan has to go and get neutered in the next couple weeks, and i'm so scared! I know its super easy and common... But i'm still nervous.. He's my baby :( Is it often things go wrong? Or am i being a paranoid mom?

Maybe i'm just fishing for some reassurance, but i need it!  :bandaid:

It is totally normal to be nervous! We all get that way!! I'm sure he will do just fine but we can relate on being scared!

Do try and stay calm....I know it's not easy.  My Winston was just neutered three weeks ago and he came through it with flying colors....just a little pain the night I brought him home, but he didn't even try to lick his stitches and the Vet gave me 4 days of pain pills, and I actually didn't need all four days but I gave them to him because I had them anyway.  So don't worry, (I know it will be hard on you) I am sure Finnegan will be just fine

How long is the recovery? Like, for example, how long do i have to keep an eye on him (more then usual ha ha)

We always dread that part...but I'm sure he'll be fine! It's impossible not to worry though. I have not gone through a neuter for many years and don't remember how long the recovery was, but the two girls I had spayed were amazing how well they acted...if it were us humans we'd be laid up for weeks! How old is Finnegan? We'll be thinking of you both when you go in, he'll be fine!

Fin is just about six months, so sometime in June he will be going in.

I have actually assisted with spays and neuters for dogs (and cats!) and it is relatively simple although it is surgery.  The recovery time most people reported for their little boys was less than a week although we'd always schedule a recheck about 7-10 days out just to make sure things had healed properly.  Chances are he'll be very groggy the first evening home and won't want to do much.  Keep him quiet for at least a week to give the best chance at healing things although you don't have to keep him confined to a crate if you're home.  Just don't let him jump, run on stairs, play rough, etc.  normal stuff really.

Your Fin should be just fine! Porky got neutered at 6 months and had two baby teeth extracted (they never fell out on their own) and he didn't need any pain medication.   The vet had him spend the night so they could give him pain meds if necessary, but he never needed any.    Porky and his best buddy Pete (who got neutered too) were back home and ready to play the next day.   It was hard keeping them still and quiet for two days.

You don't need to be worried at all. I was a nervous wreck too.
