Title: Neutered Dachshund in Pursuit of Spayed Female - Dog Food to Blame?
Post by: LoveDoxies on May 05, 2009, 03:35:55 PM
Both my male and female dachshund are fixed.  A couple of weeks ago, my male went crazy over the female.  I had to keep them separated because he would jump on her back and rape her.  He jumped her so hard that she yelped and fell to the floor.

I took both to the vet and the only thing they found was crystals in Sadie's urine (her back is fine). The vet said that if the female has an infection or something else odd about her urine, it can make the males think that she's in heat.  If the new diet doesn't work, Loui may need behavioral therapy

The vet also said that the dog food Nutro Lamb and Rice had too much mineral content so we put both dogs on Science Diet C/D. I have to take her back this week to have her urine rechecked.

I have four questions:

Has anyone else had problems with Nutro Lamb and Rice?

Has anyone else had problems with males pursuing females even though they are both fixed? (I realize that occasionally dogs play like that to show dominance, I'm talking about relentless, continues pursuit)

Has any other wiener out there had crystal in his/her urine?

What the heck is wrong with my Loui?  Has he been watching too much cable TV?

Any and all comments are welcome.

Thanks,

Sadie & Loui's Mom

I've noticed the same problem with Parker and he has been fixed. At the dog park I have noticed an unusual amount of Spring fever in all the dogs. I think it's the season.

You might try some Vick's in the boys nose just a tiny bit, chorafill sp wrong they are usually green tablets you get them for when females are in heat. Tablets for the girl and if that does not work keep a long line on the boy give him a lite pop show him you are unhappy with that behavior.Have had allot of boy dogs none have ever done the humping thing because it is not allowed I never let it get started guess I'm a mean mom.

In unaltered dogs UTIs are often confused with females in heat so the fact that your little girl has crystals in her urine and that this is happening now isn't surprising to me.  What I'm not really sure of is the fact that he is altered and shouldn't be doing that.  Was he altered as a puppy or perhaps he was older when it was done?  Maybe he has some 'memory' of breeding from before he was fixed that is getting triggered.  Of course that doesn't change the fact he's doing it, but once the girl gets her bladder and urinary tract cleared up it should go away.  Until then maybe keeping them separated and using a squirt gun/can of pennies to scare him off might not be such a bad idea.

I have a friend who neuters her males but doesn't spay her females and several time she's found a neutered male tied to a female in heat. I don't think neutering always stops all those boy things. Interesting about the possible UTI though...?

For what it's worth, Scooter was on Nutro Lamb & Rice for years, and I never had any issues with him going all "frisky business" with any female dog (or person's leg, or pillow, or whatever)...

She's done with her antibiotics now and he is not pursuing her like he was before.  So the UTI definitely had something to do with it.  Also, we've had like 2 weeks of rain so he hasn't gotten his usual amount of outdoor exercise so I bet he is using Sadie for some "alternative exercise."

I might look for something to spray on Sadie's booty to keep Lou away, I got to go to Petco anyway.

Thanks, y'all

That is good news! Glad it was an easy solution. On the bright side you now have your own built in doxie UTI detector!  :thumb:

Mebbe not but he has been known to nibble the back of a certain black and tan longhaired girls neck...

Porky ate Nutro Lamb and Rice for two years due to tummy problems.    We have since switched him because it gave him more energy than he knew what to do with.    e began doing some weird "Boredom behaviors" he had never done before.   For example, being too friendly with female (and male) cats.  EEEWWW!!!!   And having a little private time.       We talked to a behaviorist and our vet about it and came to the conclusion that it was probably the extra minerals, etc.. in the food causing him to act out like that.  Since switching his food he has done LOTS better!!   :apls:

Jet's article is dead on too.  Porky also got very ill from the food right before we switched.

Good to know - Lou's energy level does not appear to be affected by the new food
