We have a beautiful park in the middle of our downtown area and I took the opportunity to go there with my camera this morning. I loved all the signs of Spring and new life everywhere.
I saw a little girl and her grandmother feeding the ducks and as I got closer, realized there were babies...

Of course, the other ducks were around, too, and this guy decided to pose for me. I just love the vibrancy of the colors...

As I walked along the river, I saw another mama duck with her babies. She must have been really busy this year, or else she was the "nanny of the day"!

There were also a couple of turtles, sunning on the rocks. One person told me they would try to go after the ducklings. I do know they were keeping an eye on them.

The flowers were beautiful. I hope to go back on Friday and Schatzi may get to go with me. It is a very dog-friendly park with doggie waste baskets everywhere and doggie pick-up bags readily available. I'm going to try to get my coworker to join me and take Murphy, too, so they can have their own "Day in the Park"!

In Baker Park in Frederick, MD, about a 25 minute drive from our house, the ducks are so used to humans that they will swarm around you. In some of the local parks near our house, Canadian Geese are the dominant waterfowl, pushing the Mallards to the side. We get a smattering of Eastern Woodland ducks.
I was riding in our local stream valley park this morning around dawn and spotted a Wild Turkey. Usually, you just catch a glimpse of them scurrying by, but I got a real long look at this one!
This park was in use in the 40's and 50's and then in the mid-late 60's got taken over by the wrong crowds and was no longer a family place to be. At that time, the waterfall could hardly be seen since there was a bridge that went over that area and blocked the view. The river had been polluted by run-off from the mills in the area and many said you never knew what color it might be-it depended on what color of dye the textile mill had dumped in it that week. This area is the birthplace of Greenville. It was where the town was first settled and where the first mill was built. There is so much history there. A group of people started raising money and getting up petitions to have the bridge removed (a huge battle) and to restore the park. They finally and in place of the old roadway, a one-of-a-kind pedestrian bridge was built. The park is now one of the main tourist destinations and is incredible. I often take it for granted, but it just takes one visit - and a chance to hear the comments from the visitors around me, and I remember just how special it is. Here is a picture of the pedestrian bridge (not the best ones, but they give you an idea) It spans the river and has an awesome view of the falls and part of the west end of the city that has been redeveloped.
