Title: Robinton's at the vet'sUpdate 4/26/09
Post by: Brekkesmom on April 22, 2009, 07:52:08 PM
for a few hours.  I thought he wasn't his usual self last night, and I checked his towel and thought he'd gotten a cut on something.  I started checking him and found a hard spot just to the right of his tail.  He didn't seem to be in pain, so I kept an eye on him - drank his usual amount of water, wanted his bedtime biscuits, but he took a long time to settle down to sleep.  This morning, I noticed he didn't poop, and everything else seemed normal, but when I got home around 4, he still didn't go poop, and the spot by his tail had a red hole, and he was sensitive, so we packed up Brekke and headed to the vet's.  I took his towel for evidence, and he was his usual party guy self at the vet's - schmoozing with everyone.  Dr. McGraw said he had an impacted anal, and she was putting in a drain and keeping him for a few hours, so Brekke and I came on home.  It's a long time until 7:30 - have you got some rays for our little boy?   Thx,  Julia

Cleo asks if she can send rays?  Sam used to have the anal gland problems had to take him in once a month to get them expressed.

Aww, poor baby.  I had a cat once have an anal gland blow out and had to have surgery to remove both.  It was a pretty nasty wound.  Rays headed Robinton's way!

Thank you, everyone. I called at 7:45 and a vet tech said he was ready. He is on rimadyl and amoxicillin, and I get to "floss" the area with the drain thread, so I will get another towel for his floor bed, because this boy is leaking stuff... wash him up with antibacterial soap after doing the flossing thing, He goes back in three to five days for a followup. He had a 1/2 size dinner and is ready to go to bed - I know I am! (8:49 p.m. local time.)

Oh poor poor Robinton....Many rays and prayers on their way to Robbie and mom...that had to have hurt!  Zoe has the anal gland problem and I just had hers expressed last week.  Last night when we took Winston to the Vet's for his "Big Boy" surgery today, he got stressed out and expressed himself all over the technician.  Momma sat there and thought....Good Boy Winnie....you just saved momma some money....hahaha.  Hope Robinton heals very quickly and doesn't have any more problems   :comfort: :comfort:

Ok, for those of you who are asking, he is feeling pretty good.  I put his meds in his dinner with the hot water on the cold canned food on top of the kibble, with a teaspoon of chicken broth, and even though I have to hold his bowl up so the e-collar doesn't stop him from eating, he eats them right down.  In the morning, he gets two tiny bites  - about the size of my pinky fingernail - of blueberry bagel with peanut butter.  Each bite has a pill, and that goes right down.  He gets the funniest look on his face when he pees (and he takes a long stretch most of the time, instead of heisting a leg), as if he is in ecstasy to relieve himself.  He doesn't seem to have pooped yet, but I know they cleaned him out really good on Wednesday night, so I am guessing this is normal.  Anyone have any input on this for me?  He does have a hard time remembering that he needs more space to clear doorways and openings, so it makes me smile that he has to back up and allow for that e-collar.

About pooping......I'd give him a spoonful of canned pumpkin or a couple of prunes to help things along.  Both are natural products so it shouldn't hurt him at all.

hmmm, pooping..four days I would think is long enough.  Maybe tonight (do this outside!!) take a gloved finger and some lubricant and help him along.

And, I can't believe I am writing this, I had to help Loki last year when she had the neck thing and it was actually pretty easy as it was, uh, sorta right there after four days. She finished the job herself a few minutes later.
Anyhoo, then clean clean clean and then do the drain thing.  If you can, cover the drain while you are doing it.

It does sound pretty ew, but ya get past that pretty fast because you are helping out yer baby.

As for the pooping, if he's been eating pretty regularly then he should have some poop ready to come out although it is probably pretty sore back there.  After Cajsa had back surgery she didn't want to poop but whenever I'd check her temperature for infection, it would get things started and she was able to finish on her own.  That might be easier than a finger to the area.  Just don't freak out if the thermometer goes over 100 as the normal temp for a dog is between 101-102 degrees.  I would also not use that thermometer for anything other than dogs in the future.  lol

The best part of your post is Cajsa's ear expression in your avatar.  ha ha!

Thanks again, everyone - he pooped on his own about 32 minutes after I posted this and before I read any replies!  I guess he didn't want me to try out any of these methods...
