Title: Penny ate a bird! **Updated**
Post by: Kari on April 12, 2009, 08:34:47 PM
So on our walk today Penny got a hold of a small dead bird and I couldn't get it out of her mouth! She swallowed it...yuck!! Has anyone had experience with this? We called the emergency vet to see if we should bring her in and they said to keep an eye on her since we don't know why the bird was dead (i.e. poison). Any input would be great!

Several years ago Stormy ate a whole bird. I him picking up something and ran over to see what it was, I could see half the bird still hanging out of his mouth. I then tried to get it away from him, he ran all over the yard and into the dog door gulping as he went. By the time I caught up to him in the living room, he had swallowed it. He never showed any ill effects and we never saw any evidence of the bird again. It is amazing what a dog can digest.

When out walking the dogs with me being on the scooter Patches was trotting along side picked up a dead frog  told her to drop it and she did.I was surprised she drooped told her what a good girl she was for dropping that old nasty dead frog.Dog are opportunists at all times they will sure eat anything and everything they can Patches still eats worms if she can find one.YUCK.
I'm sure they are not happy with us for taking away their finds guess to them it was a perfectly good frog, bird or what ever us humans have strange ideas to them.

I tried to get it away from her but she had a death grip. Before I could do anything else she had gulped it down. It was a small bird but STILL! I was almost home and when I got there I had told Drew what happened and he couldn't believe that she had just swallowed it whole. I talked to the emergency vet last night and they were more concerned with why the bird was dead (i.e. poison) and to keep an eye on her for abnormal breathing, etc... I think I am going to give her regular vet a call this morning to be on the safe side. We are worried about the bones and beak and the potential damage to her intestines. But I am glad to hear that Stormy was fine after his bird incident.

On Doberman Talk allot of people feed raw they have said if it is not a cooked bone it is safe???So a whole raw bird should not be a problem for me personally I could not afford to feed raw.Have heard something about the cooked bones cooking makes the bones splinter raw they are more flexible??? Good luck at the vets.

I talked to the vet this morning and they aren't going to have us bring her in yet. They want us to wait and watch for vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or constipation. So we are on a watch and wait. At least I have the Pennycam so I can see if she pooped yet...we're still waiting.

Zuzu sez;  :thumb:  Hope it went down beak first, sometimes the legs can hang ya up.

Seriously, I watched Zuzu gulp down TWO mice in 30 minutes with ill effects whatsoever.  It's unlikely that the bird was poisoned--more likely a nestling that fell out of the nest.  AND I saw Loki eat an entire pig knuckle the size of her head once. %#&!*)#@+ trash day!

I guess it will start raining baby birds here soon.

Finally got back from the vets! If you can believe it, she already digested the bird. It only takes 4 hours apparently! The x-ray showed nothing! They did find some arthritis in her back though....fan-freaking-tastic. Although, we were at our regular vets office who hasn't dealt with her back at all. That may just be how her back looks since her surgery. We are taking her in the the orthopedic surgeon on Saturday for a second opinion (our neurologist is out on maternity leave right now).

Wow!!  How scary!!!   I sure hope everything checks out with her back.  Please keep us posted about that.    I sure hope it not arthritis.

I would have asked the vet if inducing vomiting with peroxide would help.  You would want to check to make sure you wouldn't put your dog in more danger by trying to have them throw it up.

Our "bird lover" is Amy, but we have always managed them to get them from her. Try if you want to get that close, blowing up there nose, the dog that is, not the bird, another is to slide your fingers to the very back of the mouth and push gently. We have always found the upside down hiemloch (spelling) and yelling works, we have not done it since her surgery and probably won't now.
