Yesterday morning I took my 10-year-old son Philip to school as usual, then stopped at the grocery store to refill a couple of gallon bottles of water at the grocery store. Imagine my surprise when I arrived home and walked in the door of my house to discover that Jack and Ralf had been partying while I was gone! Shredded toilet paper everywhere, and a bit of white tissue still clinging to Jack's mouth. He gave me a look that said, "I didn't do it!" but the evidence contradicted his innocent facade. I'm sure Ralf was a willing accomplice.
It took me a while to figure out how Jack got hold of a full roll of toilet paper. The roll in the bathroom was still on the spindle, untouched. The spare roll in the vanity was still there. When I picked up Philip from school at 3:15 I told him what had happened and asked if he knew where the dogs would have found a roll of toilet paper. "Oh, I remember," he said. "When Aaron and Ethan were at our house last Friday we were throwing stuff at each other. I threw a roll of toilet paper at Ethan and we left it under the end table in the corner of the living room." Aha! The roll of t.p. had been there for five days, and then little Jack (7 mos. old) discovered it when he was looking around for something to do. Mystery solved!
If they're going to trash something, toilet paper is a whole lot cheaper than furniture! I'll never forget the time Max attacked the pillowtop mattress in Philip's bedroom while I was out of the house for five hours at a part-time job. He had separation anxiety big-time, and I had to put him in a crate every day afterward until I was fired from that job a few months later (much to Max's relief).
