First of all, my apologies for not keeping everyone up to date on our new addition (and not providing piccys), but he has definitely kept our hands full. Having the peaceable Stormy all these years had not prepared us for this dynamo of a dachshund. Actually he is very well behaved in general. Housetraining has been somewhat spotty (pun intended) due to recurring below zero temperatures, but our main concern is finding toys for this guy that he can't destroy within seconds. Credit where it is due - he doesn't chew shoes, furniture, cords or anything dangerous, he is just a toy shredding machine. Canvas bobo - under 5 minutes. Terrycloth bobo - less than 30 seconds. We had to get him one of the super hard kongs because he tears pieces of plastic off the regular ones. He can tear the fuzz off a tennis ball. Hard plastic toys take a bit longer, but he will eat pieces of them (yikes!). We got him a very hard rubber ball attached to a rope - there was raised lettering on the ball something like "pet tread" and he actually could get hold of these letters and pull them off the ball. The rope lasted about 20 minutes. He got this little dragon for Christmas made of something called "chew guard". It lasted one day.
Does anyone have any ideas for toys that this 15 pound toy grinder might not be able to disintegrate? Squeakers would be good but realistically if it is soft enough to squeak he is going to go through it like a buzz saw.
I have one of those dogs.
Ms. Lucy is the destructor of all toys. If it can be destroyed. she does it, thats her purpose in life...to destroy toys. Rope bones, chew toys, tennis balls, frisbees...you name it and it's going to fall to that engine of destruction called "teeth"...she's a true killer.
just make sure you have plenty of chew toys and rope bones and everything will be alright.
Parker has a kong that was covered in fabric. Of course the fabric lasted seconds, however he still loves us to throw the kong, and he will spend hours just sitting with it and chewing on it. We also buy him toys (a little expensive) that are already destuffed. However if there is a squeaker, he will immediately remove it.
My sisterand family that lives with my Mom and I has one that is the same way and we told the people at the kennels where we board all 3 and they suggested getting a kong and putting a treat in it.Well we got one the first of the month and he loves it and knows its his.
an oak log soaked in chikken broth?
Get some old towels. Cut a bath towel into 2 or 3 long strips. Soak the strips and then wring them out into a snake. Knot it several times and pull hard. Let it dry.
At least it will be a cheap destroyed toy.

I'd be cautious with this. Back Clifford's puppy days, I tied a knot in the toe of an old sock. He chewed off the knot and, of course, ate it. That was the 1st emergency vet visit at 11 pm due to it blocking up his stomach. Good luck Rich.

I found some toys "Tuffy's". They are rated on a Tuff Scale from 5-10. Their claim is that regular toys end at a 4, but Tuffy's start at 5. Some have squeakers, some don't. I have a toy destroying APBT and have considered buying some of these toys for her, but haven't yet. These might be an option.

Try your charity shop for hand knitted soft toys for some reason our chewer Robbie (brothers dog) does not managed to get them to bits, his nanna has also knitted some for him.
Sam sounds like Oliver when we got him, and like you we were used to elder dogs he does not chew as much now but still runs arround like a nut we say he has ADD.

We are waiting for pictures, Rich... I feel your pain. Brekke as a baby would be destructive with toys - until I think Gretl and Siglen had a little "talk" with her. I think it went something along the lines of "If you don't quit destroying all the toys, we're not gonna be getting more." and "Hey, that's MY toy you just kilt!" I found some canvas ones at Petsmart that slowed her way, way down - but she still chews the fuzz off her toys - she is currently working on the cute platypus and kangaroo or wallaby sent by Auntie Roberta and Co.
I got the 12" ring toy from them that had a chewabilaty of 9. The first one lasted Zena for 4 weeks till she got the last squeaker out.
The next one lasted a week because she remembered that she had to use her back molars on the black cloth around the edge to get it open. 1 week is better than 5 min. :2funny:
Merion and the ZZ's
Nylabone used to make a chew toy called the Galileo. It was specifically designed for dogs that were voracious chewers. They lasted years with Rudy & Max. I would probably still have them, but we got rid of them after Rudy passed, as by that time Max really wasn't chewing anymore.
Miss Sophie needs to have a talk with that boy! How are they getting along together?
Great to hear how you are doing !!! I feel your pain - Toby is a toy destroyer and destroyer of everything else !!!! Rudy has had his toys forever, but they are slowly biting the dust. Rich - PICTURES !!!!
(And I appreciate all these ideas and suggestions !)
I also have a destroyer only he weighs in at about 90# Buddy the Doberman destroys all toys except the black Kong, on the Dobe talk form read where some get old jeans cut them into strips and tie knots in them, some of the thicker ropes, Hurly bones not the balls because it has a ridge on it. Kong makes a solid rubber ball comes in different sizes play fetch with Buddy with his. I buy coconuts for Buddy to carry around. Then I break them open on the cement out back then Buddy & Patches drink the milk and eat the coconut that takes them about 45 minutes then I go out & pick up the hard shell & throw it away.
All I know is you have to be extra careful when you have a dog that destroys toys you sure do not want an obstruction that cost about $4,000.00 on a Dobe allot of Dobermans have died eating socks.toys and allot of odd stuff.
Good Luck with your destroyer.Papbouv
PS: Patches also destroys toys just takes her longer.
You can put peanut butter, treats.cheese in the Kongs and freeze them takes longer for them to get the stuff out gives them something to do.\Try google things dogs have eaten you will be amazed.
Porky is the "destructo" dog too. He destroys any toy that dares to cross his path! The only thing I have found that worked was I bought some thick canvas fabric and cut it into strips. Then I took 4 of the strips and braided it as tight as humanly possible. Porky really loves it, but the longest we can get it to last is about a week. But, hey that's better than 10 seconds. :dontknow: Hopefully you can figure something out for your little guy. I was going to suggest a ring they make for puppies to chew on (it resembles a teething ring) that we've had for quite awhile. But, Porky ate it so obviously that won't work. :doah:
Thanks Janet, I found these at Pet Smart and got one rated at #9 (out of 10) toughness. It lasted less than an hour. Right now the toys that last longest are:
1. Kongs -must be the red or black variety, anything softer is shredded. Not a favorite though because they don't squeak.
2. Tough plastic toys with protrusions all over (hedghog). He doesn't like the way these feel in his mouth so he just doesn't play with them, thus they last a long time.
3. Plush squeak toys in the shape of a ball that have very short nap. These last longer because there is nothing to get hold of easily. Of course they finallly succumb to determined chewing with the molars.
We have found that if you want a toy to last longer than a few minutes, playing tug with it is not a good idea. If you play tug with it it sets off the desire to kill it. You can throw it for him to chase, but it you play tug, then it is doomed.
I have found other small dogs to well as toys :verdict: just kidding - my donut loves to shred, thats a breed thing of course, if they didn't do that they would worry me just a bit - we also have a chinese crested male that she LOVES to run around and they play and chew on each other, hiding from each other, it sounds like a battle sometimes, but they dont hurt each other... other than that, if they can manufacture it I am a true believer that a doxie can destroy it...
 I have three pink Tuffy "Bones" that I bought on sale two years ago - during Beau's computer-keyboard-shoe-chewing phase - and not one of my dogs will even look at them!
They are free to any dachsie who wants them. Just PM me your address.
