Dan and I are going to Homer to visit my sister next weekend. We are going to that wine-tasting dinner (compliments of the restaurant since they screwed things up last February). They gave us three dinners and a room for Dan and I at their hotel for the night. To make things simple and not burden my sister since the hotel doesn't allow pets, I scheduled the dogs to be boarded. They will be there 4 days and 3 nights. I am dreading it. I have boarded them there before, several times, and I know they are well taken care of and safe, but still its heart wrenching to think of dropping them off and trusting someone else with their care. How do you guys get thru it? This place doesn't mind if I call daily to check on my boys. And usually when I go to pick them up they are happy and extremely spoiled. Sometimes their caretakers let them wander around since they are both little and cute. Another good thing, Willy and Alex get to be in a "run" together. They are never let outside, this place has an indoor "exercise room." Sigh.......
3 drops of Rescue Remedy on YOUR tongue. That oughta do it.
Seriously, the biggest thing we've had to deal with Bonnie....and Maddie for that matter....is thinking like a human versus thinking like a dog. If you're thinking like a dog, they will be just fine. They have been there before and are well taken care of. They won't hold a grudge against you if you leave them for a couple of nights.....although if it were Maddie, she'd probably do a spite pee on the carpet at her first opportunity. They will love you all the same when you pick them up. They will be safe and with the two of them to keep each other company, they can gang team the rest of the doggers and rule the place!
Sandi, thanks for your words of encouragement. In the past, going to this place has been like a vacation for them. Its something different, different smells and sounds. And they have always been just fine when I picked them up.
I feel for you Patty! I have never boarded my dogs but I know how hard it would be to leave them knowing they are not happy, I hope you don't worry about them constantly. As Diane says, into each life a little rain must fall and the most important thing is they will be safe, it sounds like you totally trust where they are going. It's too bad you don't know a college kid or some responsible person who can stay with them at your house while you are gone, I haven't had any luck finding anyone I can trust who is available either (but I keep working on Delia and Ron to move out here next door to me heh! :thumb: )which is why I don't go unless she can go with me but there have been 2 times now I've had to be overnight in the hospital and she had to stay home by herself and I had someone come feed her and let her out but it totally freaks me out to think if I had to be gone longer than a night!!! Too bad no one has signed up here to doxie sit in Alaska. Try to have a good time, the time will pass quickly and you will get to look forward to 2 ecstatic doxies when you come to pick them up.
Awwww Patty - I know how hard that is.... well, I don't really - I have never done it !!! They will be just fine and most likely spoiled rotten !!! You and Dan have a wonderful time - you deserve it !!! Can't wait to hear all about it !
We may be going to Wisconsin over New Year's and I've already maid reservations to board the dogs and now with Annie at the bridge don't know what to do since I asked to have Annie&Blusky and Fritz&Manny in a pen together. We're thinking about asking if all 3 could be in a pen together. They might not let us do it that way but it doesn't hurt to ask.By the way have fun you 2!
Aww, I wish one of us were closer for you, Patty. I haven't left on a vacation for over a year because I don't want to board my crew. I may have found someone recently who'd be able to take them all though if I needed to, so that's nice. It's hard to find someone who you trust with your babies, I know.
Think of it as dropping the kids off at summer camp.

Sometimes I think that is what it is to them, they come back bright and happy and energetic. I really don't think my dogs feel abandoned because there are other dogs there and people 24/7, and so many interesting things and sounds going on. So its like a vacation for them too. I just hate turning over control and care of my dogs.

Oh that sounds just awful Parker. :2funny:
We just got the menu for the wine tasting dinner down in Homer this weekend, I will post it on the Off Topic board.
LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN, AUNTIE PATTY!!!! :meme:
Dis is Merlin and Beau, er, Dr. Leaky, an' he an' I don' want poor Willy an' Alex to be traumatized at the spa, OUCH!, I mean kennel this weekend. So just put the boys on the next dog sled to the lower 48 (we call it "CONUS" in the Navy) an' send them postage paid to Auntie Karen in Bawlamer, Mary Land. We volunteer to come up to Palinlandia and suffer at the kennel in their place. :angel12:
It's a big sacrifice, but us puppers got to stand up and be counted when a pupper's in need. :comfort: Do we need to bring our own swim trunks and sunscreen?
Merlin :laughing1:
When I take Ozzy to the place we board him, he practically wiggles and claws out of my arms to get to one of the owners.
I take that as a good sign he enjoys himself there.
They even have a nickname for Ozzy - "Ozzy, the self-petting weiner"
