Title: D-I-E-T advice for Madderoo
Post by: Madderoos Mom on November 18, 2008, 07:43:01 PM
I don't know how it happened, but Roo is looking more and more like a football every day.  I've got to do SOMETHING.  Greenbeans....are canned ones better or frozen?  I presently feed the 10 lb Roo about a handful (probably around a 1/2 cup) of CA Natural Senior Low Fat two times a day.  Should I go to 1/4 cup with beans per serving?  Since she doesn't play, it's hard to get exercise out of the old girl.  Hmmm, I do have a treadmill (remember Astro from the Jetsons?)-LOL.  It's almost completely dark when I get home at night.  We do walk them on the weekends.  Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

I'm not sure about the green bean part of it since I haven't used that with Penny, but on the feeding I feed her 1/4 cup twice per day for a total of 1/2 cup a day - she is 12.5 lbs. She does get a few treats here and there too...

Too much food I was feeding Patches 1/4 cup in the am & pm then the little brat was stealing little Gizmo's food if I forgot to pick it up Gizmo went to Rainbow Bridge sometime later. At a vet visit he wanted to put her on Dog Diet pills she weighted about 15.8# it would be over $30.00 a month really could not afford that. I told the vet I would get the weight off her dropped he down to 1/8 of a cup in the am & pm with green beans (canned) about 3 x a week she also loves raw spinach let her have that once in awhile & of course carrots. She also went for walks on my Medical scooter in the street she rides on wide side walks she trots beside the scooter last vet visit she weighed 12.2#. You have to take in account Patches will be three years old in January how old is Madderoo??? if the vet gave the OK I sure would use the treadmill. I bet if you googled how to get a dog on a treadmill you might find out how to do it without scaring him or injuring him know you have to go very slowly with it at first. I sure wish I had a Treadmill for winter no place to put one. Good Luck with Madderoo and the weight loss. I think Patches is a Tweenie vet said she did not need too loose any more weight but keeping it off this winter maybe tricky since I cannot take the scooter out as much batteries will freeze.

 I was only kidding about the treadmill.  Sounds dangerous to me.  'Sides, I've got an older model that's really LOUD when it's turned on.

I am putting a 1/4 cup measure in the food bin right now.  Thanks for all the help!!  :thumb:

I think that is a little too much for a 10 pounder too (sorry Madderoo!). My 12 lb Hallie gets about half a cup a day with a few low cal goodies thrown in like raw baby carrots, etc. She also gets several green beans, get the canned with no salt added. It does get harder to keep the weight off them as they get older! I wonder why so many doxies gain weight so easily. T'ain't fair.

I haven't had Parker very long, but I'm giving him 1 1/2 cups of Royal Canine for Doxies. No treats (he doesn't like treats) He's a lean machine. I'm wondering if he is getting over fed now. He's 9 pounds.

I feel your pain... Rudy has put on a little extra and I need to get going on him !!! I would try cutting back on kibble and adding the beans.  I have always used non-salted ones in the can - but I am sure any kind will be fine.  I HATE that it gets so dark so early !!!  And I have a treadmill and have thought about trying to put him on it - might be a pile of laughs !!!!  I am the one that needs to get on it  :2funny:

Auntie Karen will tell you the Cesar Milan swears by the treadmill. I haven't seen him use it with the small dogs, but he often uses it with the larger ones. I know that Schatzi would freak out over the noise of it.

:director: Hello, Dr. Jack Lalaine Leaky here:

FIRST: WE PUPPERS GAIN WEIGHT SO EASILY BECAUSE YOU HOOMANS ARE TOTAL SUCKERS!!!  ONE SOFT-EYED L@@K WITH OUR LIMPID POOLS OF LOVE AND YOU BREAK OUT THE TREATS IN A NEW YORK MINUTE.  WE HAVE NO ONE TO BLAME BUT YOU!! :ticked:

SECOND:  Green beans helped Roscoe Angel go from 24 pounds to 14 pounds.  Fresh, canned, frozen , salted, unsalted, makes no difference.  Remember, we're CANINES!  Cholesterol is not our issue - darting in front of cars is! :bolt:

THIRD:  Auntie Karen feeds Ima PainInTheButt - I BEG YOUR PARDON! - sorry, girl, a cup of dry food and a 6 ounce can of puppy chicken food, and she currently looks like an Ethiopian famine victim.  She spends the day in the pupper yard barking and running around. :dontknow:

MY ADVICE:  Some of us burn calories, some of us store them.  So.  Feed.  Us.  If we start looking fat, either cut back on the food, or break out a little green beans.  If we look too thin, either up the food dosage or go for puppy food that is higher in calories and protein.  :feedme:

OH, AND THE TREADMILL?  GO FOR IT!!  Cesar Milan has made MILLIONS on videos of dogs on treadmills! :thumb:

AND YOU!!  THE ONE WHO NEEDS THE TREADMILL?  GET ON IT, GIRL!!! :walk2:

:headbang: Thank you!!!

Porky is a little too hefty right now.  He is going on a very strict diet too.  He and Roo can be diet buddies.   Porky needs to lose 1- 1 1/2 pounds total, so its nothing major.   He is a 10 pounder right now and we have been feeding him 1/4 c. of food a day.   Since he has been sneaking food from everyone's bowl, he gained weight.   He is already looking a little slimmer and we've only just started last week.  The only thing we changed was following him around and making sure he didn't sneak any food.   Let me tell ya, he's a good little sneak!    He hasn't had the green beans or anything, but we have been going for looong walks daily which helps.  He goes on a half hour walk in the morning and a half hour walk in the evening.

Good Luck with Maderoo's diet!   Hope she does well.   What food are you feeding her?   Different foods have different feeding amounts, so its hard to tell you how much she should be fed, without knowing what kind of food she is eating.    Usually the side of the bag has an area where it tells you what you should feed for your dog.  For example, Porky's food says to feed 1/2c-1 cup of food a day for a dog up to 10 pounds.  Since I want him to lose weight right now, we are doing the 1/2 cup a day.    Once I get him where he needs to be, we may need to increase it a bit if he keeps losing weight.    Hope this helps you a little bit.

I think 1/2 cup of food twice a day is too much.  This is what I did to get my dogs to their proper weight .......  1/4 cup regular dry food in the morning.  One small Milkbone, or equivalent, at noon.  Green beans for dinner (One of those small cans for one dog.  I would split a big can between two dogs, green beans are good for making them feel full, and they like them.)  One small dog cookie later in the evening.
You could also buy those small cans of mixed vegetables or peas and carrots for variety.  I found it easier to use canned vegetables rather than frozen, you just open the can rinse and put in the bowl.  I don't think Maddie will be hungry if you just spread things out during the day.  But better hungry than overweight and potential back problems.
Another idea is, instead of the dog cookies, get a kong and slather some peanut butter in it and freeze it.  That will keep Maddie busy for a while and give her a nice treat.
Hope this helps.

I should let Aunty tell you about a way to get them to lose weight but here it is.

You take the food in a dish and throw each piece across the room for her to go get.
She uses more calories getting it than she is eating.

Aunty did this with Twinkie when Nancy was in the wheel chair after breaking her leg.  It worked very well.

not if you coat it with p-nut butter

oh wait, that defeats the purpose.  sersly, my 12 pounder gets 1/4 cup WEllness x2/day plus baby carrots and maybe two cookies.

Yes, I agree with everyone else... seems like a lot of food for little 'Roo.  Delilah gets 1/2 C in the morning and 1/2 C in the pm with frozen green beans and that keeps her at a healthy weight for a standard (~23 to 24lbs) Get yourself a measuring cup.... it helped me get the exact amount for Delilah.  We use frozen green beans 'cause it forces Delilah to chew otherwise she swallows her food whole. You should watch to make sure she's not sneaking some of Bonnie's food.... Delilah does steal Franky's if I don't watch because he eats so SLLOOWWW.

Canned green beans are good too but personally I only buy the no salt cans because you'd be surprised how much sodium is in canned vegetables.
We also did away with most treats.  My guys used to get treats for everything... night night time, potty time, leaving for work, etc.  The vet told us that 2 milkbones can be the equivalent of a full meal for a little dog.  Now we give tiny low fat bones (or even just 1/2) and carrots.
Best of luck!

Obviously, the amount of food required is going to vary from dog to dog and from food to food.   If I give Zora (about 12.5 pounds) more than 2/3 cup per day (1/3 in the AM, 1/3 in the PM), she is going to blow up like a balloon.  With Zeke, who is a larger dachshund at around 15 pounds, he gets a 1 cup a day (1/2 in the AM, 1/2 in the PM)...when he actually eats it.  Many mornings, he turns his nose up at his food and heads back to his crate to snooze.   I'd LOVE to put a couple of extra pounds on Zeke, but he just wants nothing of it.  Ideally, I think Zeke would look good around 18 pounds, but I just can't get him to eat, unless I start giving him hooman food, in which case, he'll pick up the weight too quickly.

my duh mum, down here we get small teenie 90g foil packs of high end dog food, wez get a third of one with each meal, and I can tell you 9 bits of kibble with that ain't much.
Amy
mum here, we call small foil bags or foil packs with pull back lids sachets here. Missies weight is probably on the top end as she does not like moving, Oliver gets a level 1/4 cup R/D plus the 30 g and we have to give him a little extra every so often as he is at the bottom end but he never sits still. I suppose they are like us some have better metabolisms  than others.
