Title: Could it be sign of "going down"? PLEASE READ
Post by: Leslie on October 10, 2005, 06:40:18 PM
Loki refused to go up the step to the house coming in from her walk, and I had to help her.  She went through the door threshold fine.  She has been a little constipated recently, but had a movement this afternoon.  Perfectly fine until an hour ago, then really "off" for an hour. She is wagging her tail and can walk, etc. Even did a roll over on command (Which, OMG I thought, mebbe I shouldn't have asked her to do that--DUH :verdict:) She gave a little snarl when I palpated her lower abdomen, and tucked her tail in, but showed no reaction when I ran my hand hard down her back. She just got up on the couch to steal a chewie.  What gives?  A hard stool on it's way?  She DOES love to eat cardboard and will steal it whenever she can--which is often.  Or sign of something major.  No crying, no moaning, no shivering--just sat on the floor for a nhour after our walk (she peed normally) and like to scare me to death.

ANY INPUT?

Other than not wanting to go up the step, it doesn't sound like any of Clifford's spinal episodes. We keep our paws crossed and rays coming your way for it to just be something she ate.

Thanks, Mike, that is reassuring.

Daddy's takin' her to the vet first thing in the morning.  Just because she's a dachsund.  It's the rapid onset that worries me, running around like mad at 4 pm, and then by 7 not wanting to go up the step.  And again at 8pm, took her out, she had a movement, and still did not want to take that step.  Gave 80 mg of coated aspirin and put her in her crate for the night.  Will probably read the whole vet book and worry if I don't stop right NOW!

When I ran my hands over back again, she sat down--so that DOES worry me.

My guess?  If I had to lay money on it, I'd say abdominal blockage.  The little turd will eat ANY cardboard she finds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  OR possible arthritis?   HHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhmmm--sure wish they could talk--but only when we wanted them to!

Like all doxie parents, we worry about everything.   I think it best that you get her to the vet - just so he can check.  The few episodes I have had with Rudy's back - were clear - tail tucked, shivering, hunched.  We have a door jamb the kids have to walk over after going for a walk (coming in the front door).  Sometimes Rudy takes it slow - and I watch him closely.  Normally, I just figure he is stiff.  Sending rays that Loki is just fine - please let us know after she goes to the vet.  Might try adding some pumpkin to her meals to help soften up the stool.
