Title: My cousins rescue horse
Post by: Dee Dee and Hallie on November 11, 2008, 06:11:41 PM
I can't seem to find the old thread on this! But for those who remember my cousin's rescue horse, she found him starving and talked the owner into giving him to her (skin and bones) found a tattoo on his lip, found he was a very well bred thoroughbred...named him Tucker. He was my mount when I would go riding with her because he is SO tall (over 17 hands) and I have looong legs so we fit. Anyway she had traced his lip tattoo and found his is a grandson of Secretariat, son of Tribunal, etc. So they nursed him to health, then last spring found a trainer and took him to the track where he's been since. His first few races he would come in toward the back, 5th or 6th, then he was finishing in the middle, then the last few he was second and yesterday he came in first over 6 other horses and won by ten lengths!! The boy has figured it out. :) His registered name as it turns out is Final Appeal. He will come home in a couple of months until next racing season so I'll get to ride him again although not sure it will be as easy now that he's all buffed up and ready to run, last year he was a slow ride I'd have to urge him into a trot or canter! Anyway it's a neat story with a happy ending for him he is doing what he was bred and loves to do and will have a great home to come back to when it's over.

Here are some pics of me riding him a few months after she got him, he had put on a bunch of weight already. But had a long way to go. I don't have a photo handy showing him at his worst. As you can see he was barely broke here I was working on getting him to flex and not pull against the bit.

What an incredibly wild story! how lucky your cousin was able to nurse him  back to health and allow him to do what he was bred for I'll bet that makes him a happy horsey!!

Funny I was speaking about him yesterday...............my he is a stunner. Be careful that is how my sister in law broke her leg her mount sparkie had just came off the race season and all gassed up, Julie was in a ring when thunder struck she knew when he started to circle he may go down so she jumped and ended up with a broken leg.

But he is a stunner, just shows what good food and love does. good that they tattoo (bad enough) out here they brand and the hind leg.

He's gorgeous.  WOW!  A grandson of Secretariat.  It blows me away.
My hero is Barbaro..........he taught me about horse legs and why a horse with a broken leg is a bad scene.
Thanks Barbaro, and rest in peace.

Patty It was my sister in law  that broke her leg not the horse.  She proceeded to drive about  on  a Quad bike with her dogs to get things done.
