Title: health concern
Post by: Barry on November 08, 2008, 09:15:39 PM
Missy has a rash below her neck (about the size of a quarter) She digs at it quite a bit and she is also flapping her ears alot.  It is making her act strange too.  Walking with her tail between her legs and ears back (not normal for her) and she won't lay down (she tries to keep her head up as long as she can) and she is not in pain Our last dachsund had a staff infection that gave her similar symptoms but she nver acted strange like Missy is.  She was just at the vets for a annual checkup that came back fine, but she had a growth under her chin and the vet gave her clavamox that took care of the growth, but then she has started with this rash.  Also our last dog took clavamox for her staff infection .  Couldn't get into the vet today will have to wait till monday.  Anyone have a similar experience?

I agree that the tail between the legs means something is not right.  Get her to the vet asap on Monday.  Let us know what happens.

I don't know that I would wait until Monday.  If there is an emergency clinic near you, I would take her there.  If she is having a reaction to the meds, you don't want to continue giving them to her.  If the reaction is not from the meds, you don't to stop giving them to her.  Something is definitely wrong.  Rays heading to Missy.

what is strange about missy is she doesn't walk around with the tail between the legs all the time, just occasionally.  When it is treat time or she sees a squirrel she is back to normal.  she will lay by herself more (when before she was always on the lap) she just seems seems more distant.  My wife thinks she may have ear mites by the shaking of them (again it is not constant but shakng them more than normal)  she is doing ok this morning and  i have quit giving her the meds (she only had 2 days left) and her growth is gone.  thanks for the concern

My little guy, Porky hs allergies and acts just like that when his allergies are bugging him.  I would get her checked asap.  The shaking of the ears, Porky does too.  He does it a lot when his ears itch from the allergies, or from an ear infection.    Please keep us posted about missy!

It sounds like it could be a reaction to the clavamox.  Especially if she stops having issues when you stop the meds.  It wouldn't hurt to get her checked out anyway just in case something else is going on.  Rashes are a sign of allergy, as is headshaking (if it's affecting the ears).  You could try some benadryl 1 mg per pound.  Probably a childs dose of 12.5 mg would be fine.  I'm not really sure how big she is though.  When I worked at the vet's office that was the dosage given.  The max dose was 50 mg and that was for dogs 50+ pounds and I seriously doubt you have a dachie that big!

All is well with Missy.  I took her off the clavomox and she improved in one day.  she doesn't dig and is not flapping her ears anymore than usual.  thanks for the concern.  So glad she is driving me crazy wanting me to throw her the tennis ball
