Title: mushrooms?
Post by: Dee Dee and Hallie on November 02, 2008, 06:03:03 PM
We had an unusually dry fall and now the rains are here. I noticed today my back yard is FULL of small mushrooms on very thing stalks, not much larger than grass blades. They are everywhere. I am sure they are poisonous and I'm afraid Hallie could be out there and take a grass snack and accidentally eat some mushrooms...so I've shut the gate to the back yard and she's going to have to use her potty house which she will pee in but she just won't poop in there...anyway just wondering if anyone knows of any way to safely get rid of those darn mushrooms? Good gosh I can't even relax with a newly 6 + foot fenced yard with her  :thinik:

well, the good news is she will not actively search them out as a food snak, they seem to have little or no enticing odor.  Truly we have a few shrooms here and there in the yard and have not had cause to worry--and some have been quite large.
Anyway, as memory serves, those little spindly ones only last a few days.  After they open their umbrellas and release their spores they start to fade and die quickly.  Keep her inside till Friday if you are really sooper dooper worried.  (WHO? Dee Dee? Worried?)  BUt I would suspect a dawg would have to eat a LOT of them to cause problems.  I have never heard of a canine being poisoned by indigenous mushrooms.

Why not call your local agricultural extension service and find out about the type of mushroom you are growing.  It would save you a lot of nervousness. :dontknow:

That is good news Les, I'll watch close to see if they disappear! We get the bigger ones too I don't worry as much because as you say she wouldn't seek those out (and admittedly...I go out and hand pick those every day lol) but these tiny ones I could see her picking up with grass if she were to take a munch they are so small. I've never seen so many of the little buggars before. Super dooper worried...moi? LOL it's no coincidence my last name rhymes with worry.

Auntie Karen...the voice of reason. Excellent idea I will do that tomorrow morning!

There are mushrooms and Toad stools that grow need to find out what they are maybe take some to your vet they might know if the are safe or not.Good Luck Papbouv Try not to worry get informed as much as possible.

Dump some vinegar on them, they will go away.  I hear vinegar also works on Devils Club.  But keep Hallie away from them in the meantime.  Thankfully up here in Alaska we have what we call FREEZE, and it kills everything.

I certainly don't need any more drama this year so I will keep her out of the yard until they are either gone or I know for sure. I have heard of other dogs around here who have died too from eating mushrooms but I don't know what kind they were. I would imagine all mushrooms would be toxic to some point though. I only noticed them yesterday they came on fast so couldn't have called the extension agent yet anyway but I will tomorrow.

That's a good tip Patty I will try to remember that for future smaller outbreaks but these little guys are absolutely EVERYwhere...you can't even take a step without stepping on them it would take gallons of vinegar they came on so fast they were not there on Friday now they are everywhere. Normally I go out and hand pick the toadstools but wouldn't be able to with these little guys. We are getting close to freezing (ugh I hate it) so maybe that will help knock them out.

Yep, I think the best thing to do is just keep Hallie away from them.  Yikes, what next???  These little guys sure do age us.  Thankfully we have snow on the ground and it has been below freezing, so now Willy can go out and not get the rash he gets when in contact with green stuff on the planet earth.  Try to relax, and I will do the same.

Psssst....  Hallie?  Dis is Oscy Sanders.  Do you gots to go outside when it is FREEZING?????  Does FREEZING mean dat it's colder den 50 degrees?  My mama sez dat when da temperatures go below 50 degrees (thank goodness not very often) dat I FREEZE.  I hope the yucky mushrooms go away soon.  I bet dey don't taste as good as treats anyway.  Maybe dem mushrooms are GOOD.  You can stay inside where it's all warm and cuddle wif your mama ALL DAY!  Now that's da good life Hallie!

I am not much help on getting rid of pesky fungus stalks... lol   But, hey Oscy, freezing around here is when it drops below 70 for me & EmmyLou....  For everybody else in town it's when it drops below 0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    Yes, it does get that cold...   And, the kids don't get out of school unless it is -20, then they have to go at 10 instead of 8...  Can we just come stay with you in the winter???

if you pick the red toadstools with white spots wear disposable gloves or use a plastic trash bag.  Some of them are wicked piosiones Sp?)  and will cause all kindsa weird effects.

All this talk of cold has me shivering LOL. It is so miserable this time of year when it starts to rain and it won't stop for months no doubt...Hallie and I miss sitting in the back yard in the sun! Of course now the back yard is a freakin' mushroom factory...we want spring back....or a winter home in Texas! At least it's not super cold yet I really hate the cold.

Thanks for the tip on that Les I haven't seen that one yet but if I do I will give it much respect! My solution thus far has been to only let Hallie out there when I'm with her she doesn't eat grass that much but this way if she started to I could stop her. She never eats in the middle of the yard anyway just along the edges so we stay away from the fence just in case and I try to keep her to the least mushroom populated areas. With this rain she just wants to poop and run inside anyway! I didn't have time today to take in a mushroom to the extension guy and tomorrow is full too but I will hopefully on Wednesday.

If these are purely hallucinogenic...well then!  :thumb:  :angel4:
