Title: Leptopirosis Vaccine for Patches ?????
Post by: papbouv on October 25, 2008, 12:23:42 PM
Ok here is the facts right behind our house is a Cement block factory they have Rats,Mice, Fox, and no telling what else lives over there last winter we had a Ice Storm took out allot of trees so everyone had piles of limbs and trees in our front yards for pick up by the city which took months to clean up.Since we have found a dead Rat in the garage attached to the house also dead Rat in the back yard also neighboors have been finding dead Rats around in the yards. Patches is due for her Leptopirosis Vaccine but have heard Dashchunds are prone to having reactions to the vaccine ???? Can anyone tell me more about what kind of reactions should I hang around at the vets for a bit should I even give it to her. Any advice or thoughts on this subject thanks ahead of time.

Many Dachsies do tend to have allergic reactions to the vaccine.A lot of vets give a small dose of an antihistamine like Benadryl along with the vaccine to prevent any reactions.
Like in people the little guys will get hives within a few hours of getting the shot.Benadryl will also work after the fact too.

I was faced with this decision last March (with Ilsa) and Sept (with Gretchen). My girls are 9 (5 months apart, Ilsa will be 9 next month) and I had never given them Lepto. My vet said it's making a come-back in this area. Soooooo, I decided to give it to them. I gave them benadryl 1 hour before and 3 to 4 hours after. Ilsa's ears swelled a little. Gretchie had no reaction. From what I understand, they can have anything from a little swelling (usually on the face) to, worst case scenario, respiratory arrest due to the airway swelling. It's a good idea to hang around the vet's for about 30 minutes after. As in most cases, there's no right or wrong answer. You have to go with your gut feeling.

Both of my dogs swelled up like balloons a few hours after getting the lepto vaccine. I ran them back to the vet, she gave them a shot and the swelling went away for both dogs but my female, Lucy, continued to have swelling problems for another 3-4 days.

Now, we skip the lepto when we do shots.
