Title: Kleine's Walking/I'm Not
Post by: Eileen on October 06, 2005, 10:35:27 AM
Hello everyone.  As some of you may have heard, I fell over a gate we put up in our kitchen to keep Kleine in there with her in my arms, couldn't brace myself and wanted to keep her out of harm's way, so my left leg/foot took the whole brunt of the fall.  My foot turned under my leg and I fractured my ankle in three places and now have a plate, screws and pins attaching it to my leg.  I have never hurt myself this badly in my life.  I just had the stitches taken out yesterday (more fun than you can imagine) and can't really look at my ankle without barfing.  This will be a long haul for me.

he upside is that Kleine is walking, although she has an arched back and a hyper-extended back right leg.  We are weaning her off the valium and pain meds this week and she still seems ok...I am almost afraid to write that!.....so we are hoping for the best.  She is peeing and pooing on her own and has even gotten her feistiness back...last night she was "awooing" and we didn't want to go upstairs yet (another big feat for me) and she looked at us, and went "AWOOOO!!".   She is very upset that I hurt myself because of her but I keep telling her it is ok.

Trying to work 5 -6 hours a day to keep my spirits up and my mind functioning.  Today I am in a boot thing trying to stretch my achilles tendon/foot back to 90 degrees.  Again, more fun than you can imagine.  I now know I have a very high tolerance for pain.  Will keep you all posted....

You're a tough lady, Eileen, you'll make it!  Sure sounds like you dinged your ankle up pretty good.  I bet the x-rays are impressive.  We have a cop friend who broke his ankle chasing after a criminal.  You should see his x-rays.....nails going every which way, holding all those bones together.  Oh my!!!  I'm so happy to hear that Kleine is doing better and getting her ornery-ness back again.  You "sound" a lot better.  Having your girl home helps, I'm sure.

I'm SO sorry to hear all of this!  It's hard enough to take care of a pupper who is not feeling well without something like this happening!  You are in my prayers!  Hang in there!  Kleine....make sure to give mama lots of kisses. She needs them right now!

Eileen,
If you are like me, you will quickly start hating the sound of velcroe! I did get creative and put fun stickers on the plastic part of my boot. At least it gave me something to smile about! Also, once the ankle isn't sooooo sore, toe socks are fun too. You have to find something to keep yourself smiling or you'll just want to cry too much! I hope the recovery and therapy go quickly for you.
Title: Teresa, what did you break?
Post by: Eileen on October 07, 2005, 10:48:20 AM
Yes, I am getting a little better on the crutches each day, and it putting on the darn boot.  This morning I cried because I wanted to get my heel down in the boot and stretch my achilles tendon so my foot will go back to a 90 degree angle.  I did get in down more than yesterday, and then hurried and strapped it up, so hopefully it will stretch more today.  I'll have to get those toe socks!!  By the way, I thought you would get a kick out of this....I went to a conference right before I did this to myself and I won the toy fire truck!  It is quite big (maybe four feet or so) and has all the whistles and bells.  Of course I will bring it in to the station and put it somewhere near my desk, but so all the guys can see it too.

I broke my ankle last year, but didn't have to do the surgery. With mine, the sprain was much worse than the break and the doctor said at least if it had been bad enough for the plate and pins, he could have seen how much damage was done to the tendons and ligaments instead of having to guess. After 4 months of doing physical therapy, we finally decided to do surgery last January to repair the ligament. So, even though it may seem like a lot to deal with right now, you hopefully will get all the suffering over with at once! Remember this- one name for a physical therapist is physical terrorist. Some say that is what the PT really stands for. I had two great ones and one of them has become a dear friend. The only problem is, she keeps me doing therapy, even now.
I also put multi colored eyelet lace around the top edge of the boot. I have to wear purple uniform pants and work and got tired of the black boot, even with the stickers, so the lace dressed it up a little. I will also email you the 10 rules of physical therapy. They are guaranteed to make you laugh! :2funny:
