So back when we were going through all the problems with Penny's back we saw a dermatologist for skin problems as well. One of the things she told us is that we should put sunscreen on Penny's belly since she loves to lay in the sun.
That being said, this week we noticed a number of small (pea sized) dark blotches on her belly skin. They are smooth, not lifted or rough. Anyone have any experience with this? I'll post a picture later when I get home... Worried a bit about skin cancer...
**Update...so it is hard to take of picture of the spots...the flash kept washing them out. Here is the best I could get right now, Penny was getting annoyed with me!**
Oooh I'd like to see those too. Hallie has a new black spot on her pink little anus. It is about the size of this zero 0. It also is flat and not raised and there is only one but it is getting slowly larger. I of course am stressed about it and have an appointment next Tuesday at her dermatologist 2 hours north of us. I also want him to check a lump under her skin and a cyst on her paw.
My vet doesn't think the black spot is anything bad but she doesn't know what it is and keeps repeating that no one can tell you it is or isn't bad without biopsing it for sure. I am just hoping the derm has seen a lot more skin things and may recognize this. Hallie just turned 8, how old it Penny? Several have suggested age related spots which I hope it is for both of these girls! My vet looked up in her vet book and she did find something she thought might be it and it was totally a benign thing but I don't recall what it is. Hallie does lick under her tail a lot due to her allergies.
Let us know what you find with Penny too I'm anxious to see the pictures.

Interesting... Penny is going to be 6 in December. I have an appointment with her dermatologist on Monday at 3:30 PST so we will see. Part of me thinks that they will tell me it's nothing/normal and I'll look like the crazy doxie mother that I am...but I would rather look crazy and have it not be seriously than not go and have it be something serious in the future. You know what I mean...
when Lucy was 2 she had a spot cut off of her ear that was cancerous.
I'm taking her to the vet this week because Im sure she has another spot that is cancer, im sure of it.
but, she's got a bunch of spots exactly like you described, Im thinking they are pre-canerous cells.
I so hate to put her through anymore medical procedures, she's had enough if you ask me, she got hit by a car when she was 1, then 7 years later we learned she had a hiatal hernia because of the car incedent.
omg my vet bill....
Hmmm....it sure is hard to know. That doesn't look all that suspicious to me, it's good they are flat. I'm glad you are taking her in, I'll be interested in hearing what he says for sure. I know exactly what you mean Kari. We have to do what we can for our own peace of mind. But we have to remember that these things almost always have a much better chance of being OK than not! (I'm trying to take my own advice here too). Hallie's spot is much blacker than Penny's.
2 is awfully young for a cancer did they say what kind it was? What is making you think the new spot is also cancer? Was Lucy's spot flat or raised? I know what you mean about putting them through stuff. It's hard being a parent sometimes!
Emma had these pigments from early on and live to over 17 they said it was allergy related. So Dee Dee how close do you go over Ms H.........................

Yeah...that picture isn't the best. The spots are actually darker than it shows. She has about 3 of them. Totally agree about it usually being okay - I would rather have it check out than not!
That is strange. I really hope they are nothing to worry about! Please keep us posted about Penny and Hallie's spots!!
I'll bet Roberta nailed it, I'll bet it is just a reaction to something, I am hoping that Hallie's too is allergy related somehow.
LOL Roberta lets just say I get alot of eye rolling from the vet...but then I'm sure that is true for most of us neurotic parents here. Hallie and I have kind of switched roles lately I am way sick again the doc yesterday is still stumped and is trying to think outside of the box for answers and calling on 2 other drs, Hallie is the one worrying about Mom even though I am trying hard to be upbeat with her but it is sooo precious, she has been way extra silly getting me to laugh and if I lay on the floor she drapes herself across me like a blanket and doesn't move. Extra cuddly too. You just gotta lOVE these sweet little guys!
I'll be really anxious to hear what the vet says about Penny, Kari. Like doxielady says be sure to post, I will post next week too. I'm sure they are both just fine...Penny and Hallie must secretly PM each other and plan these things! :angel4:
I don't know except maybe sunspots/age spots? It doesn't look like anything bad (cancer). Gretchen never got the spots, but when we first got her the entire area of her tummy was black! Mostly because she would lay on her back in the sun and had a tan! Part of it was also the food she was eating, but her tummy is pretty pink now.
That's interesting April, when I got Hallie her tummy was completey black too. Now it's all pink, it all flaked off like black elephant skin.
When we got Loui, his belly was black. He's also had spots in different areas but we've taken him to different vets and they all said that it's nothing to worry about. I will keep bringing it up at his annual check ups. Maybe it's just a weird dachshund thing?

Entirely possible - when Penny was a puppy she had a pink belly but it is rather dark/black now. I'm pretty sure from what people are saying it probably isn't a big deal, but who knows. It could be a dachshund thing...wouldn't surprise me !
Simon loves to lay on his back.At 9 he stills has a fairly benign color to his belly and no spots. But he's also never had as much outdoor time as he's had in the last 4+ months.
Murphy gets blackheads from time to time (you should have seen the look on my face when the vet told me what they were), but mostly in the fall and winter. They're completely flat too. I got a good picture of them last fall. Do they look anything like these?

Interesting...that is what they look like, but bigger. Wonder if that is what they are!
I can totally relate to being told something by the vet and the look on my face... Mr Tucer the C-A-T had bumps on his chin and the vet told me that it was Feline Acne! LOL! Who knew!
Our Golden who is nearing 9 has 'age' spots on her, too. From her nose to her belly. I'm not worried & by the pic, it looks the same as our Brandee's.
Meant to update this yesterday...sorry! Took Penny to the dermatologist and it is allergies - the spots are the result of inflammation. The only problem is we don't really know what caused it. There hasn't been anything different at all! I decided I didn't want to pay $500 to find out with allergy tests right now, so we are going to monitor it and use a calming spray. Also had doctor look at her ears again...her vasculites has flared up again :verdict: so he adjusted her meds a bit for that. Now my wallet is $120 lighter, but all in the name of keeping Penny healthy and happy.
Bummer about her ears but it sounds like it's an easy fix - adjusting her meds. I agree with you about the allergy testing - especially if she doesn't look bothered, ie, itching. Penny-girl, you get some rest and work on cranking your immune system down a few notches. And when you figure out how to do that, your parents will be rich!
So sorry to hear that Penny has had another flare-up....at least the spots are nothing serious....yea :hello2: :hello2: Take care sweet girl....we want you to get all bettah :thumb:
That is great news Kari! Itchies are doable. I'm so glad it wasn't anything worse. :hello2:
