Post by: Frankys_mom on October 12, 2008, 07:48:01 PM
Has anyone has experience with acupuncture for pain management for their fur-kids?  I would appreciate some info & feedback if anyone has gone this route.
thanks
Dawn

I haven't had it done on my pups, but I have a friend who took her dog there. He had really bad arthritis (an old cow dog) and it seemed to help him quite a bit.

No I have not, but I have taken angel Emma to Bowen and that worked for her. I would try it and see.

I've heard of it but personally can't offer advice on it.

Like doxielady I too have a friend who's experienced success with acupuncture. Her lovely happens to be a female half Newfy/St.B.(BIG!) named Shakespeare and after two full hip replacements is doing just fine and she swears by the acupuncture.

Both Conrad and Finnious have had accupuncture to manage pain. It has worked really well for both of them. Conrad has had three back surgeries and also has blown disks in his neck. He has had accupuncture to manage the pain in his neck. Finnious has had one neck surgery and one back surgery. He has periodic back pain for which he has had accupuncture.

Thanks everyone for the input.... I am a member of Dodgerslist, but that site can get overwhelming with so many people needing critical help and this site is more like "family".
Franky had a bad flare-up this weekend, so he's back on crate rest and pain meds.  As of today, he's doing really good no pain episodes or screamers as I call them... acting extra ornery and grumpy from being crated... which is typical for him

Roberta, I was intrigued by the Bowen technique, but couldn't find an animal practitioner even remotely close.  I did however find a video which I may order and they do hold seminars across the USA that teach Level 1 and Level 2 for pet owners which I am checking into.  Franky's chiropractor has moved out of state and now only comes back to the vet clinic once a month, so she's booked up.

Clarese, may I ask how often you generally take your furkids for acupuncture and did you have any problems? (I read that sometimes it makes things worse before they get better).
I found a local animal acupuncturist and also ordered some Fresh Factor supplement.

Again... thanks everyone for the input

Hi Dawn,

When they have had initial pain, we took them every 3-5 days for a few visits. After that, we went every other week a couple of times, then every three months unless they began to be painful again. I have never seen any worsening of problems following accupuncture with either of them. In fact, their relief has been instant and extended.
