Title: What's this world coming to....?
Post by: Frankys_mom on October 08, 2008, 05:06:03 PM
:soapbox:

There's a gas price war going on in my area right now.  A small gas station up the street trumped them all by lowering their price to $3.11/gallon.
I went to fill up and while waiting patiently in line I witnessed (1) a woman in a car with a BABY not secured in carseat swerve in to cut someone else off and almost caused an accident (2) then a separate incident....two people actually got of of their cars and started a fistfight over who was there first.

I had enough and drove up the street to the empty station that was charging $3.20/gallon.  Cost me about a whopping extra $1.20 total to fill my tank....and avoid the madness.
Gosh, I'm still upset that people can treat each other with such reckless disregard.  sigh!
I'm quite sure none of those people were dachsie parents.
thanks for letting me vent.

There has been a lot of crazy stuff around here since Ike and the shortage. Supplies are better, but the prices have been slow to come down. On Friday, one station had gas for 3.25 while everyone around was still 3.75 (and we used to be the cheapest state in the nation!). People lined up and the store was smart enough to have someone outside keeping the peace. They ran out of gas later that day. On Saturday they had gas again and sold it for 3.05, then on Sunday for 3.02. That was the day I went there. It amazed me that no one else was dropping their prices around them. What happened to competition? Today this place is selling gas for 2.86. It's been a long time since I"ve seen that price. The other stations close by have finally dropped to around 3.20, but everywhere else is 3.40-3.60. The biggest battle at the store that is the cheapest is the one when trying to get into their parking lot. They have a small area and you end up on a major highway. The people driving past will not hesitate to blow their horns or come right up against you. They are the ones that worry me sometimes!
I do worry about what is going to happen in the next few months. I've never really worried much about it before, but this is one time I'm feeling a little uneasy. Each time I go to the grocery store, the prices are higher and I know it's only going to get worse. Today I had to go get some Wellness food for Molly and Schatzi. It had gone up 5.00 in 4 weeks. They said it had to do with the gas prices. As soon as they went up the food went up. I ask the clerk if it would go back down if the gas prices did. We both agreed that would never happen!

Tulsa OK gas $2.95 today wonder when we get a new president if things will level off for a bit, I think it does not matter if gas goes up or down the food prices will keep going up & up.Humans & Pets soon we may not be able to afford Pets only the rich will I mean if you take care of them like you are suppose too. If that does happen will be a very sad time for alot of people.

That is so sad!    One of my biggest pet peeves is people who put their innocent babies at risk like that.    Its really not hard to put them in their carseat.    I definately can't complain about the gas prices here.   It is 2.90 here which has gone down a lot!!    I don't think we ever topped $4 this summer, but I know we came very close.  I can see how frustrating it would be to wait in the long lines for gas.   I'm so thankful that where I live, most people still are generous and caring about other people.   If there was a line in our town, the mother and her child would have gone first.   Then the elderly, then all the other people would take turns based on who pulled up first.

Yikes!  maybe that's why I try to ignore the price and just go to the same place all the time where I get the best gas mileage from. In the long run I am pretty sure I am still saving money! at the very least in aggrivation!

I feel the same way, Teresa.  One tip, if you haven't already..... sign up for the Wellness newsletter (from their website).  They do a monthly newsletter that they send by email & it always has a coupon for food or treats... ususally $ 1-3.  I'm a super coupon clipper 'cause every little bit counts!

Also I whole heartedly agree with all of the comments in this post.  We're just hoping to ride out the storm.  We were joking at work 'cause everyone is tense right now & I said " man, I hope I don't turn into my grandmother & start saving all those breadties and collecting balls of string" :thumb:  I give my grandparents a lot of credit though, for making it through the Depression & raising a family of 10.

I'm glad I'm not in the age group right now that remembers the depression and is really starting to panic. Randy and I were talking last night about the number of people wanting to pull their money out of the 401K's. The younger crowd understands that it should come back and we have plenty of time for it to do so. It's the ones that are older and either about to need that money for retirement or already using that money that don't know what to do. As Randy said, if they pull it now, they are getting it out at it's lowest point yet. We've just decided to not look at the statements right now and keep ourselves from stressing out about it. The fire department told their employees a few weeks ago that they would NOT have health benefits after retirement (thank you, Enron and all the new laws you have spawned), but they may consider increasing the amount they match for their 401K. That might come in mighty handy!
