Title: I hated to do it....
Post by: JetEd73 on September 12, 2008, 01:02:10 PM
I was returning to work after having lunch with a friend. Low and behold, a small weiner looking dog meandering along in the highway. I stopped traffic in the middle of the highway and picked her up. An old dog, outside dog, bad teeth, not taken care of, she's as old as the hills.  I hauled her off to the animal shelter. I feel bad about it, but it's all I can do for her....with the exception of making FOUND flyers. I took her picture with the camera phone and made 25 found fliers. I'll post em up all around the area where I found her.

Im hating it for the dog.

Doesn't that just break your heart?!   Don't feel bad for taking the dog to the shelter. Its better than her getting run over or worse!   Poor baby!  I had to do that with a maltese last year when we were visiting my grandma.   Poor thing was scared to death.

Heart breaking for sure. The only way I could turn her in and live with myself is by putting forth an effort to find her owner. I'm willing to bet nobody would adopt her, she's old old. Anyway, personally, I think people should have to have a license to have kids and own dogs. The Shelter chief said they get over 150 dogs a week, 8000 put down last year.

people suck, no wonder I like my dogs better than most people.

 Big question is:  how do they destroy the unwanted pets?  Gas?  Phenobarbitol?

If you can work it out and if it only costs $25 or $30 you may want to consider paying to have her put to sleep.  It is painless and peaceful and she probably deserves a gentle ending.

If you need the cash, I can donate.  Let me know.

i know you feel bad i would too, but you should also know that you probably have done 200% more than most people and worst case scenario her last days will be well cared for  :thumb:

You were a HERO in my eyes today.  At least she's in a shelter and safe.  If she IS to be put down, it will, without a doubt, be humane.  Not like being on the road, like you found her.  Gentle sleep.  You are my hero.

I'm not sure how they do it. I know my vet will put her down using some sort of shot, green or purple stuff, she'll do the Phenobarbitol for FREE.

I have to call the pound today to check on her.

I saturated the area with flyers so maybe someone will call.

 Did you contact All American Dachshund Rescue?  It's headquartered in Nashville.

I'll see if I can find an e-mail addresss for Diane, who runs it.

I did not contact All American Dachshund Rescue.

I will contact them but the dogs not really a dachshund...and it's old old old, I'd say the chances of it being adopted are almost 0 zero. I'm almost hoping the poor thing passed away in it';s sleep last night. I hate to say it and think it but that dog is on it's last legs.

You're a good soul, Ed.  "Granny," the old soul, appreciates it.

Well, I went down to the pound to check on the dog and talk to Animal Control. The seems to be doing good, rested and feed and sociable. It might make decent pet. Seems  to be better than when I dropped it off. I'm going to plaster some more area's with flyer's and hope some one claims her. The Animal Control officer said on that on Thursday he'll call a rescue group and see what they can do. I'll check back with them wednesday. If worse comes to worse, they use Phenobarbital.

I'm trying...

Ed, Bless you, you really are trying.  She appears awful sweet.  Hopefully the fliers will work, maybe her owners are just irresponsible and they let her out to roam....who knows.  God Bless you for trying.  Let's see...how many are in your household?
