Patches will be 3 years old in January she has fuzzys on her sides and here & there is she not suppose to have fuzzys ? what do you do with the fuzzys ? Patches is my first Dachshund so really not sure what her coat is suppose to look like all I know is she weighs 12.9 pounds and is a Red Long Hair. When she was a puppy she had dark area that looked like patches so hubby named her Patches now no patches except on her tail it is black in one area and she has black on some of her ear fringes.?

Exactly what you're describing-that picture looks like she has a spay coat-or she might just need a good heavy duty conditioner. In a spay/neuter coat no matter what kind of conditioner you put in, it stays fuzzy and wild. Winston has the same thing from being neutered young-you can see the picture below of him growing his coat for winter. You can strip out a lot of that with a stripping knife-that'll smooth out the coat by taking out the dead hair. I'll put a couple links below-one to a show breeder that shows you how to use a stripping knife very nicely, one to a link with a good stripper to use, and a couple good conditioners that might help if you want to try that first (reds and chocolates have a tendency to get very dry coats that look fuzzy).
Winston's neuter coat.

Magnolia Dachshunds has a good guide to grooming (mostly for show, so for a pet, just use her guidance on using the stripping comb).

This is the stripper I used on Winston-fair warning, when it comes-it's TINY!

A lot of people swear by Fur Butter (or fur worse) by Happy Tails for conditioning a longhaired dachshund-I haven't had any luck with it-it makes Winston itch like crazy-I'll try it on Millie and see if it works better with her. I also have the Isle of Dogs Royal Jelly shampoo and Heavy Management conditioner. These worked a little better for me. And as an aside, if anyone has a gassy dog, I highly recommend Happy Tails Dog Smog Remedy-works great for my guys with 10-12 spritzes in the water dish.

Thank you Kathleen at least I now know what people mean by spay coat.Gee did not know about using a stripping knife on a Long Hair just like Bouviers had them for 20 years still have my stripping knifes from my Bouviers. Usually just clippered them since they were pets. I did read you should not clipper Dachshunds.Patches hates being brushed so she just may stay fuzzy since she is a pet never even got papers on her. If I wanted to do anything with her figured I could get a LP number, too old & decrepit for shows and such.
Thanks againPapbouv
Hi Papboy,
I really like Patches look, she's quite pretty! Like you, I wouldn't worry about it to much, she's a sweety just like she is :thumb:
She is precious!! She has a gorgeous face and her eyes are out of this world. We LOVE the fuzzy look  People often try to give me pointers on how to tame her hair but I wouldn't change it for anything. I'll bet at least 80% of the people who pet Hallie will comment on how soft she is. We should give our spay coat girls their own category....the fluffy dachshunds. :afro:
Hallie does love to be brushed she comes into the bathroom in the morning and turns and sits with her back to me for her morning comb out. :thumb: She has an ILP number too she says tell Patches it's kind of fun not having to come up with a fancy name that is a mile long! (her registered name is "Hallie" :thumb:) She is now Hallie CD RN BH CGC so she has more title letters than in her name lol.
Winston is a little doll too!
you are a pretty girl and you look perfect.

ps now this is a hair problem
I love love love Amy's hair! (and Amy too!)
I wish Hallie still had that much hair...maybe this winter it will grow back.
