Title: Hip! Hip! Hooray! For MADDEROO!
Post by: Madderoos Mom on August 23, 2008, 07:11:00 PM
I think we're on to something that WORKS for itchies!  First of all, what didn't work....at least for her.  The natural supplement I bought on the Net appeared to work some...at first.  Then the barfing came.  She was pukey sick for 2 days and I immediately stopped the vits.  I also bought the shampoo and that made her WORSE!  Goes to prove that just cuz it's natural don't guarantee nuttin'.

Then I tried apple cider vinegar.  Seems to work pretty well, but the whole house and the Roo smells like a salad.  I will continue with that if need be.

But the STAR OF THE DAY,  we tried Mane and Tail HORSE shampoo and conditioner.  WOW!  What a difference in the first day!!  While she isn't completely itch free, there's a huge improvement.  I might rotate between the ACV and the Mane N Tail.  AND ALL THE PUKIES are gone too and she's eating well.  Talked with a vet (back to an old one....the same one that helped with Dolly) and the nurse there suggested white rice, boiled chicken and plain yogurt to get her back in order.  It works and she loves it.

We're going on vacation in about a month and I want to get her back on kibble only but she simply won't eat the stuff the OTHER vet prescribed so I'm slowly working in some new food, tonight being the first night she sampled it and lo and behold, she snarfed it right up.  We chose to try Canidae because it's locally made in SLO county, so little chance of tainting through big factories....or that's how I figger it.  So, when we are ready to take her to Spring Dale Kennel (gulp.....I hope she'll be okay there...we inspect the place tomorrow) she will hopefully be on a kibble diet again with no wet food.

Well, there's my novel for the evening.  Thanks all for keeping little Madison in your thoughts and hearts.

Wow!  Poor Madderoo!  Umm, if the Spring Dale Kennel doesn't appeal, let me know - especially if for any reason you would be heading in my direction...

So glad you found something for Madderoo to help stop the itchies.  My Oscar has a tough time in the Spring and Fall.  This week I have noticed him scratching himself more.  I think I'll try the Mane N Tail.  Right now I just use an oatmeal shampoo.

Smoochies to Madderoo.

Well, I may have spoken too soon.  She is going crazy today.  Back to the cone but the shampoo and conditioner still have merit.  It seems to soothe for a time.  I think the final answer is a good rain and a new season......I hope.  Back to square one with the lampshade.  She really doesn't seem to mind the cone and I have it off when I can watch her.  Present treatment:  shampoo owie areas (backside mainly) and condition and leave in.  Supplement with a ACV spray as needed.  1/2 benedryl for nighttime.  Also finally found some rescue remedy. Add a few drops to water and there you have Madison's cocktail.  Fall can't get here quick enough.

Oh crud I hated to read this. I have noticed Hallie scratching lately too so I think there is something in the air being worked up here too. I'll bet Maddie is wishing for fall to hurry up too! I hope she (and you) have another reprieve soon.

That really stinks that she's still having such a hard time!!     We are really hoping for a quick fall here too.  My husband and I have horrible allergies and have been miserable this whole month.  Porky's allergies have gotten better, but he still has bad days.  I really hope that poor Madderoo's allergies get better soon!!  I know how miserable the itchies can be!!    :comfort:
